Chris and I spent the afternoon lounging around, watching movies and occasionally stealing kisses, now we were in the kitchen.
"Do I call you Sabrina or Rachel?" He asked as we set the table for when our friends get here.
This is the most open I've been with anyone, and it felt good. Actually, it felt great to know that someone knows the real me, and still likes me despite my past.
Now Chris knows my past, just like I know his, and I think we might be stronger for it. Not that we're a couple or anything...
"You've been calling me Rachel since you found out"
"That's your name" he said. "But you refer to yourself as Sabrina, not Rachel"
I balled up a napkin and threw it at his head, laughing.
"Hey, I'm not crazy, okay?"
"Says the girl who talks to herself"
"Plenty of normal people talk to themselves"
"But they usually talk to themselves in their head"
He hid his smirk from me, knowing he won. "When I move, I get in the mindset that Rachel doesn't exist anymore. That's how I was taught to think. It's safer"
He put down the glass and turned to me. "Would you prefer if I called you Sabrina?"
Looking at him, a sense of comfort flowed through me. I think hard about his question and about what I want, not what I think I need to do.
"I'd like if you called me Rachel, but only when we're alone. And only if you can manage not to slip up"
His eyes lit up, but he quickly masked it, like I gave him the answer he secretly wanted.
"Your secrets safe with me"
"I know" I got serious again. "Thank you, Chris. For being there for me. I know I'm a handful, and I caused a lot of drama, but I recognise everything you do for me. So thank you. For keeping my secret, for not making me feel alone-"
He cut me off by closing the space between us with two big steps, grabs my face in his hands and forces me to look at him.
"Don't thank me. I'm always here for you"
He leaned in towards me, his lips close to mine but never quite making it. Because the doorbell rings. And we pull apart.
Great timing everyone. You couldn't have waited a few minutes?
The doorbell rang again, our friends either freezing their asses off or anxious to see Chris.
Chris seemed so far away from me. "I think that's for you"
The doorbell rang again.
"I guess I should get it" Chris laughed, going towards the door.
He opened it, and was tackled by Madison, the force catching him off guard.
"I knew you didn't do anything. How dare you scare us acting mysterious and not giving us answers?" She pulled back from her tight hug. "I mean, really? We worry about you!"
If you didn't know Chris, you'd think he was annoyed by her scolding, but he loved her pestering.
"Next time I'm arrested, I won't make you go home"
Madison gasped, glaring at him. "There better not be a next time"
Matt was the last one through the door. He opened his arms to give Chris a hug. "Bestie!"
