Alora's P.O.V
Were doomed, Elias muttered for what felt like the hundredth time.
Would you quit saying that? I snapped, my patience wearing thin.
Well, you might escape unscathed, but your dad is going to bury me alive, he whispered, a note of genuine fear in his voice.
Hes not going to bury you alive, I retorted, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
Elias shot me a skeptical look. He might, I conceded in a whisper, causing Elias to groan in despair.
I didnt even get to say goodbye to my mother, he gasped dramatically.
For heavens sake, Elias, youre not dying! I exclaimed, exasperated.
And how would you know? he retorted, his tone challenging.
I sighed, turning to gaze out the window. Fear was gnawing at me. I had never seen my dad angry before. I didnt know what to expect. When my mom got angry, she hit me. I was used to that. But my dad he had never been mad at me before. I didnt know what I was walking into. He wouldnt hit me would he?
Well, here we are, Elias said, breaking the silence. Most people run away from death. Cant believe were walking right into it.
Will you stop with the death talk? Youre not dying! I snapped, my nerves frayed.
Elias exited the car and opened my door. Since when did you become a gentleman? I asked, stepping out of the car.
Since always, love, he replied, flashing a smile that revealed dimples.
Since when do you have dimples? I asked, surprised.
Since always, he replied, looking at me as if I were an idiot.
Huh, I never noticed, I mumbled, more to myself than to him.
Well, I think you never noticed me until now, he said, his tone thoughtful.
I paused, taking in his words. I had never noticed these details about him before. Why was I noticing them now?
You okay? he asked, concern evident in his voice. I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
We walked in silence towards the hospital room, each lost in our own thoughts. As we neared the room, my anxiety spiked.
Upon entering, I saw my dad sitting on a chair, his head in his hands. My brothers were there too, their faces mirroring dads worry.
Alora? Bruno whispered, causing everyone to look at me. Hi, I mumbled, my voice barely audible.
Where the hell were you! Vincenzo yelled, causing me to flinch.
Elias, are you serious? Do you have any idea how worried we were? Marco accused, his gaze fixed on Elias.
Im sorry. Its not his fault. I pressured him to take me out, I defended Elias, my eyes still fixed on the floor.
You should have informed us, Alora, Alex said, his tone gentle but firm. I felt a pang of guilt. I had thought they were mad, but in reality, they were worried.
Im sorry, I apologized, looking up at Alex. His eyes softened as he sighed.
We talked to the doctor. Youre discharged, he informed me, causing me to smile. I glanced towards my dad, realizing he hadnt said a word.
Dad, I called out, but to my surprise, he ignored me and walked out. His silence hurt more than any yelling could have.
Dont be surprised. He was really worried, Lorenzo said, his gaze sympathetic.
