[ HARLEM, NY ]

The chilly winds of New York's fall rustled the green grass, casting a gray ambiance in his thoughts. The entire scene, including the sky, seemed to foretell a day of unfavorable weather. With one eye covered by an eye patch from the injury, he stood at a distance, listening to the pastor's sermon about God's grace, seeking protection for his grandfather's soul with the Holy Spirit as he rested. — Despite the absence of an invitation, Juan made the decision to attend, maintaining a distance from the guest and avoiding eye contact. The past week had been challenging, marked by school absences and missed meetings with Sosa. Fortunately, Travis provided academic support, helping Juan stay on the right track with his coursework. Although struggling with attendance, Sosa, understanding Juan's need for personal time, refrained from adding pressure and continued to provide financial support.

Supported by Malik and Roscoe during their long runs, Juan found solace in their silent companionship as they stood together, respectfully listening to the delivered sermon. This moment was particularly challenging for Juan, feeling an internal descent into darkness. He grappled with guilt and abuse from someone he deeply cared about, compounded by the recent passing of another loved one, with blame unjustly directed at him. Despite the immense emotional burden, Juan chose to conceal his feelings, opting for isolation and silence. — With the pastor concluding the sermon, the cue was given to move the casket into the grave. A poignant moment unfolded as guests, encompassing coworkers, friends, neighbors, and extended family, delicately cast flowers onto the casket. Notably, Roscoe's aunt and uncle, along with Malik's parents, also joined the gathering to offer their condolences.

Despite the desire to pay his respects alongside others, Juan held back, choosing to wait until nightfall to avoid any confrontation with his grandmother. He respected his grandfather enough to keep the peace. His gaze shifted to his sobbing grandmother, stirring anger within him, especially towards her. The thought of speaking to her again held no appeal. Unable to endure the scene any longer, he signaled to Malik and Roscoe, silently conveying his readiness to leave. The three quietly walked away from the emotional gathering. — Approaching Malik's car, Juan noticed Yolanda and Jade patiently waiting for them. Jade's sorrowful expression caught his attention, surprising him with her presence, although he wasn't shocked considering Yolanda's constant company. The two seemed inseparable, like glue.
