Damon didn't know what had gotten into Elena lately. Usually, she was far too trusting of strangers so he didn't know where that Law and Order style breakfast convo had come from.

"Don't let her get to you," He told Rose when Elena and his brother left after seeing her appearing a bit deep in thought.

"No, no I'm not," she tells him but he doesn't believe her.

"Hey, everything alright?" he asks pulling her close and brushing some hair out of her face.

"Remember what I told you the night you found Jules in the cells?" she asks.

"Yeah... that you did something," he says remembering their conversation from the night.

"That I didn't know as much as I thought a vampire should," she says reminding him.

"Okay," he says not knowing where this is going.

"I may have understated things," she explains.

"How so?" he asks.

Rose looks down but Damon brings his hands up to cradle her face forcing her to look at him, "hey, whatever it is, it's okay," he tells her.

"Damon I don't remember anything from before Elena's kidnapping, I actually don't even remember that. It's like I woke up the day after in that abandoned house and she and Trevor were just there," she tells him.

"What, like... vampire amnesia? Well given your age it's more likely vampire Alzheimers," he says trying to make light of things.

"Damon," Rose stresses.

"You're still functioning, it's not like you don't know how to eat or talk, so it definitely rules out vampire stroke," he says keeping it going.

"Forget it," Rose says walking away.

"Hey, wait," Damon says chasing after her, "Come on, talk to me," he says.

"There's not much more to say," she tells him, "so if Elena has more questions something tells me she's gonna continue to be disappointed."

"Who cares about Elena, this is about you. What do you think happened?" he asks taking it more seriously now that he can see how it's upsetting her.

"I don't know... I thought maybe compulsion at first but if that was true why would whichever Original compelled me let me keep the knowledge that an Original could compel vampires? Wouldn't they not want us knowing that? I mean I immediately got us all on vervain it doesn't make sense if this is down to one of them," she says.

Damon hadn't considered she might have been compelled which was an alarming thought considering how involved she had been in all the plans to save Elena.

"I don't know, but we definitely can't rule it out," he said his mind now racing at the possibilities.

"Maybe they wanted you to dismiss the possibility it could be compulsion so they let you remember that part to give you some illusion of control," he suggests.

"I guess that's possible," she admits.

"That's why you weren't more devastated by what happened with Trevor," Damon says thinking out loud a bit, "I wondered why... at first I thought you had your switch off but that wasn't it, it was because you didn't remember him," he says.

"I knew who he was, I recognized him at the house but details of the years we lived together just weren't there," she explains and Damon nods trying to work this all out.

"Could it have been Elijah?" He asks.

"I don't think so, if it was why wouldn't he compel the memory away that I know Klaus is his brother?"
