As soon as Kyllian yanked the kid's leg upward he woke up screaming. He looked even more terrified than before. His hands scrabbled at the plastic dumpster lid underneath him, trying to make sense of whatever was happening to him now. Kyllian felt the wound get caught on the broad edges of the fence's ornate spike. It felt extremely sickening. He swallowed back bile and pulled harder. More skin torn and ripped. The kid woke up screaming incoherently. Blood seeped more aggressively from his wounds.
"What did you do?" Hershel asked. His mouth fell open, baffled.
"I saved time." Kyllian replied. He felt strangely proud of himself for what he did. He'd dared to act in a tense situation.
"Might've killed him." He grumbled back, tightening the tourniquet as much as he could. "Get him in the car and hurry. He doesn't have much time before he bleeds up."
Ash sat on the broad armchair with a thin blanket draped over her shoulders. She could oversee the whole living room from where she sat. It was dark outside and long after bedtime. No one had noticed yet. Everyone was too busy with something else. She doubted if they even remembered she was there.
Ash didn't mind because she got to stay up late like the grown ups. That was usually only allowed on special occasions, so tonight felt just a little bit like one of those special days because of it. Although the adults did nothing fun.She watched her father pace back and forth through the room. Whenever he did that at home her mother said it was because of work, but he didn't have work anymore. Nothing about tonight made much sense.
She pulled the blanket tighter around herself. Patricia gave it to her some time ago, saying she looked cold. Now Ash just wished her brother was here. He would be fun. Even Carl wasn't fun ever since he found out he was going to be a big brother. He'd found out this evening and it had been the only thing he'd talked about. Why wasn't Kylian back yet?
She put her feet on the ground quietly, still afraid someone would send her to bed if they heard her. Still no one seemed to notice her. She wanted to walk in the bedroom where her mother was watching over Beth with Maggie. Maybe her mom knew where Kyllian was. Someone stopped her before she could reach the door.
"Where are you going, young lady?" Dale asked.
"To my mom." She replied.
"But your mom's still helping Beth."
She fumbled with her hands. "I wanted to ask where Kyllian is. Dad's pacing and I'm not supposed to talk to him then."
"Well, I might be able to answer that question, if you'll allow it."
She shrugged, "I guess."
"Your brother is with Rick and Glenn. They've only been gone for a couple of hours, but they should come back soon."
"That's what Praticia said a while ago and he still isn't back."
"The time will go faster if you sleep."
