"What are we supposed to do with our hostage now?" Leland asked, leaning in on the dinner table inside the farmhouse. "He can't stay here."
"Can't leave him out there either." Theresa sighed. "He can barely walk, Hershel said so himself. We should give him some time to heal before we make any decisions."
"I agree." Hershel nodded.
"He can only bring trouble to us." Shane shook his head. "He needs to be gone."
"And what do you want to do? Put a bullet in between his eyes?" Dale asked with scoff.
"It's the safest for us."
"Rick, Glenn, Hershel and I didn't just risk our lives to get him off that fence for him to be killed because it's supposedly the easiest out for us." Kyllian grumbled.
"So you trust him to be around your sister?" Andrea asked, clearly siding with Shane.
"I never said I trust him. All I want is to give him a chance."
"You gave him a chance by bringing him here and fixing his leg." Shane rubbed his head. "If you don't want him to get shot, Rick and I will decide on a place out of the way where we can drop him. We'll transport him blindfolded, he won't be able to lead his group back here."
Theresa watched Lori run up to her with a concerned expression on her face. No, it was more than concerned. Theresa stood up immediately, the school class could wait for a moment.
"Carl, Ash, why don't you work on your reading for a bit? I'll be back in a moment and we'll continue with calculus." She said as she walked away Neither kid protested but neither child grabbed their reading book.
Theresa knew that whatever Lori was about to tell her was bad news and not meant for children's ears. She didn't even mind that they started folding paper planes and playing with them.
"Beth she..." Lori started, unsure about how exactly she was going to say this. "She tried to hide a steak knife from me. She took it from her lunch tray. And now I'm afraid she's going to hurt herself and I don't know what to do."
"Find Hershel and Maggie, tell them. Is Beth alone right now?" Theresa settled into the calm role of nurse.
"Yeah, I came straight to you."
"Okay, I'll go to her, tell them that was well." As soon as she'd finished her sentence she ran towards the house.
At the moment, with Beth being as frail as she was, every second she spent on her own was a risk. The poor girl had suffered enough and broken down mentally, clouding her rational thinking.
Of course that was not how it felt for Beth. It never did at the moment. In the moment ending her life felt like the best option. An escape to that unbearable pain. A moment of pain for eternal rest.
For that very reason Beth shouldn't be alone. Theresa flew up the steps, across the porch and into the house. It was a small blessing that no one was inside, Beth didn't need more witnesses to her misery. The wooden floorboards creaked beneath her feet and she finally made it to Beth's room.
