"Halt! Who's there?!" A man yells.

"Just a weary traveler." I say.

I approach a small hut in the woods. The man points his stick at me. I could easily kill him, but I need food and shelter from the next blizzard that will soon be upon me and them.

"What do you want?" He asks.

"Do you have room for me? There will soon be a blizzard." I say walking forward.

"Ah, well, you seem harmless enough." He puts down his stick.

His wife comes out. I look up.

"We have plenty of room. You must be freezing." She says.

"Yes." I nod.

She opens the door for me. I grip my black cloak. My form is now no longer human. My arm is no longer recognizable to be a human's arm. I have to be cautious. I feel the warmth of the fire on my skin.

"You must be starving. Please sit and eat with us." She smiled.

I nod. I haven't been treated this well for not as long as I can remember. I sit down. She hands me a bowl of rice and soup. I look up at her. She puts more food down including lotus seeds. I haven't seen them in so long. My eyes widen.

"Please eat." She smiles.

I nod. I pull my arm up. I can make it look human but only for a short while. An illusion spell. I haven't used chopsticks in over three years. My chopstick skills have dwindled, more with one arm. I can barely use them.

"You're not from around here, are you?" She asks.

"No." I say.

She helps me lift up the food. I take a lotus seed and put it in my mouth. I haven't eaten these for years. They taste hard and bitter. Bitter like my life has been. As I chew, I see my foster siblings. I remember Yanli peeling these for me. I was such a child back then. But, like all children, they have to grow up.
