Chapter 15
•Alex's P.O.V•
Monday afternoon. The final bell rang throughout the school and elementals flooded the halls, as they always did. I packed up my books and bid Ms Blair's goodbye before bolting out of the classroom. I weaved my way through the pool of elementals with an excited grin on my face. Why was I in such a rush? Simple.
Today I started training with the seniors.
I'd been anticipating this the entire weekend. The thought of being able to perform other types of elemental magic excited me. And today was the day I'd finally start learning how.
After a few minutes of running, I'd finally made it to the arena. I stepped through the archway, hunched over and panting heavily. My lungs were burning.
"I'm, here." I said out of breath. "I'm...crap. Just...gimmie a minute."
I let out a long exhausted breath. After a bit, I'd finally managed to catch my breath enough to notice...
...nobody's here.
The arena was completely empty. I'd been expecting one of the seniors to be here waiting for me, but to my surprise, that wasn't the case.
"Huh...looks like I'm the first one here..." I muttered. I set my bag down against the wall close to the entrance. At that moment, I saw someone skid past the archway, then came stumbling in a second later.
"I'm here!" Jack hunched over, holding himself up with one hand on his knees and the other on the archway. He looked like he was sweating.
"Sorry, I'm late, little man." He huffed. "I, got caught up, in...whoo...gimmie a minute."
I chuckled. "Nah, it's all good."
Jack took in a deep breath, exhaled and look at me with a toothy smirk.
"Right! Let's get started!" He cracked his knuckles as he made his way over to me.
"Where are the other seniors?" I asked. Jack shrugged.
"Beats me. We agreed one-on-one sessions were the best way to train you. Focusing on multiple elements just complicates things, so we're going one at a time. They're all off doing their own things." He explained.
"Oh, makes sense." I shot him a determined smile.
"So, what's our first lesson?" I asked eagerly. "Is it Animal instinct? Geo-morphing? Shockwaves?"
"Whoa there, bud." Jack chuckled. "I appreciate the tenacity, but slow down. We'll get to all that later."
Jack snapped his fingers. With a flash of brown light, his school uniform was replaced with his sports uniform; black basketball shoes with brown laces, shorts and a sleeveless hoodie. I knew that he was muscular at my first meeting with him and the other seniors, but his sports uniform highlighted it even more.
"Whoa..." I muttered, my cheeks a light pink. I shook my head and snapped my fingers, changing into my own sports uniform with a burst of fire.
"Alright, now that we're properly dressed let's get to it!" Jack smiled. "Activate your earth magic."
"Yes sir!" I nodded. I got into a fighting stance, clenched my fists, closed my eyes and focused, grunting softly to myself as I tried to do as Jack said.
But after a while...nothing happened.
I looked down at myself in disappointment. I didn't feel any different than I did a second ago. I groaned.
