Chapter 13

•Alex's P.O.V•

The sound of the school bell echoed throughout the castle, signalling the end of the day once again. I made my way through crowds and corridors as elementals poured out of the classrooms and flooded the halls. On my way to my common room, Lexie and Haru caught up to me.

"Hey, Alex!" Lexie greeted, a cheerful smile on her face.

"Hi, guys." I greeted back. "How was Beastiology and P.E?"

"Exhausting." Haru groaned. "Coach Gust made us do fitness the entire time. I can't feel my legs."

"Beastiology wasn't too bad. We studied the magical capabilities of basilisk scales. It was really interesting." Lexie said.

"Lucky." Haru muttered.

"But what about you? How was Combat class?" Lexie asked.

"Oh, we started learning some new combat manoeuvres and fighting styles. And Mr Silva said that pretty soon, we're gonna learn how to use weapons as well." I said as we walked. Lexie and Haru shot me looks of surprise.

"That's so cool!" Lexie grinned. "My team is still going over new combat manoeuvres."

"Same." Haru added. We reached the stairs at the end of the hallway and made our way down to the ground floor. We continued our chat as we made our way across the courtyard.

"So, me and Haru were thinking of heading out into Strixhaven to gather components for the chromatic orb project. Wanna come with us?" Lexie suggested.

"Sorry, guys." I sighed. "Axel and I still have a lot to do on our project, like figuring out what components we're missing to make the orb with, so we agreed to meet at the library after school." I explained.

"Oh." Haru said, his voice low. "I forgot that you were grouped with him."

"Yeah. I still don't understand why Professor Blaze thought it would be a good idea. Especially since..."

Memories of that day rushed through my mind. Haru crying on the floor, Axel screaming in pain, sure it happens a while ago, but it still haunted me from time to time. Things have gotten better between me and Axel since the start of the semester, but I could never really get those images out of my mind. I shook my head and turned to my friends with a smile as we made it to the Dormitory Wing.

"I need to drop off my things in my common room. I'll catch you guys later?"

Lexie and Haru shared a glance before turning to me. "Alright, we'll see you later then." Lexie waved. The two of them then turned and headed off. I turned and went up to my common room.

The library was almost empty when I walked in. I looked around, finding no one but Mr Finch, one of the librarians, with a couple of scrolls in his arms. I made my way to him. Upon noticing me, he jumped, dropping a few of the scrolls in the process.

"Ah, young Fier." He grinned, catching his breath. "You startled me."

I bent down and picked up the scrolls. "Sorry, Mr Finch." I apologised. "You need some help?"

"Oh, that would be very much appreciated, thank you." He said. He pointed to one if the high shelves. "I need to get those scrolls all the way up there. I could just transform into a bird, but feathers can't really hold rolled up pieces if parchment very well." He chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.

"No problem, just leave it to me." I smirked. I tapped my door on the wooden floor and sparked a flame at my heels. I began to hover over the ground slightly, making sure to keep my balance. Mr Finch shot me a concerned look.
