Chapter 24

•Alex's P.O.V•

Time seemed to slow slightly as I sat in Professor Zaptos's class, hearing him ramble on about a new artefact with great excitement, like always. His enthusiasm was the only thing keeping me from falling asleep. As much as I enjoyed learning about all the magical items this realm had to offer, it was surprisingly difficult to keep my eyes open.

My head began to droop in a sleepy haze, only for it to jerk back up again as a small jolt of lightning shot into the side of my neck.

"Owww." I massaged the side of my neck, the stinging sensation lingering for a moment before disappearing seconds later. I turned to the side to find Zack staring at the old professor, eyes half-lidded and keeping his head held up with his hand. He seemed just as bored as I was tired.

Professor Zaptos had begun explaining a magic wand that was supposedly from another realm of magic entirely. Something he called the 'Elder Wand', or something like that. However his voice soon began to drown out as I felt something in my chest. A strange sensation, an almost static vibration pulsing through from my core to the tips of my fingers. My fingers tingled with a numbing jolt, strings of jagged light sparking in my palm. I could feel my hair standing on end as it began to pulse a static yellow, an energizing aura enveloping me. It was a feeling that, at this point, was all too familiar.

The professor had turned around, drawing diagrams on the blackboard while my hair began to spark silently. The others each shot me a glance, to which I shrugged. Upon noticing the change, Zack sat up and shot me a confused stare.

"I haven't trained with Erika yet." I whispered, answering the question he had on his mind. "I'm just as confused as you are."

"You think the Thunderstone could be nearby?" He whispered, his eyes lighting up in realization.

"I don't know." I muttered. "The sensation feels kinda faint."

"But if your lightning magic is being triggered then it has to be close. Your magic wouldn't react like this if it wasn't, right?"

I thought for a second before closing my eyes to focus on the energy, feeling for it as small strands of electricity sparked in my hair. Surely enough, it felt similar to the first two stones we had, except I noticed it gradually getting weaker. A yellow light popped into my mind, appearing to move further and further away, until it fizzled away. And with it, so did the static sensation at the tips of my fingers.

I turned to Zack, shaking my head. Zack hummed.

"When are you training with Erika?" He asked.

"Tomorrow." I whispered back.

He scratched his chin. "Do you think you'll be able to sense it again afterwards?"

"Maybe?" I shrugged. "I can't be too sure."

"But if it worked with the first two you found, it should work with the Thunderstone, am I right?"

"My connection to the stones isn't something I have control over. I can't just turn it on and find them like some kind of metal detector. Plus, I don't know if unlocking my lightning magic will even-"

"What is all the whispering about back there?"

Professor Zaptos turned around, cutting our hushed conversation off, finally facing us after a full two minutes of drawing in the board and rambling on about the old twig. His eyes then fell on me and widened, staring with a mesmerized, and incredibly confused expression.
