Chapter 5

•Zielo's P.O.V•

"Wait, really?" I asked. Alex replied with a nod.

The two of us were in our room, sitting on my bed, chatting about our first days back in class. But Alex being grouped with Axel for their group project was not something I was expecting.

"Yeah." Alex replied. "Professor Blaze said that it would be good for the two of us if we worked on this project together. And while a part of me agrees with him..." He trailed off, scratching the back of his neck. I put my hand on his shoulder and nodded for him to continue.

"...I still don't feel comfortable with the thought of working with my bully. With Haru's bully. The same person who I left second degree burns on." He sighed.

"But didn't you guys forgive each other before the midterm break?" I asked.

"Not exactly. We just agreed to start off fresh, wipe the slate clean. Sure, he promised to change, but we never really forgave each other for what we did."

I shot him a glance. Alex let out a breath and continued.

"But it's not like there's anything I can do about it anyway. And who knows? Maybe the professor could be right about-"

I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. The light at the centre of the room. The light bulb was flickering, tiny sparks surrounding it. The light started glowing brighter and brighter, and a faint buzzing sound started singing in my ear.

"Uh, Alex?"

"What?" He asked. I pointed to the light, but right as he turned, it went off. He shot me a confused look.

"The light was acting all weird." I cut him off. He raised his eyebrow.

"Is this some kind of joke?"

"Do I look like the joking type?"

He shot me a look. An unamused look. He sighed, standing up of the bed.

"I'm gonna go to the library. Maybe I could get started on the ingredients for the chromatic orb." He walked out of the room, waving goodbye as he left.

I looked up at the light bulb suspiciously. Could that have been my eyes playing tricks on me? No, they never do. I saw what I saw. I stared at the light bulb curiously.

All of a sudden, it began to glow again.

I tilted my head in confusion. "What in the..."

I walked over to the light switch. It was in the off position, and yet the light was still shining. I flicked it up and back down, but nothing. That faint buzzing made it's way to my ears once more as the light got brighter. Then, just like the first time, small yellow sparks flashed around the light bulb. I stared on curiously.

"What is going on? Is the dorm's electricity on the fritz or something?" I wondered. "Wait, no, it couldn't be. The entire school is powered by magic. There shouldn't be any faults in the grid. So what's happening here?"

The buzzing got louder and louder, the bulb glowed brighter and brighter, the sparks started circling the light, travelling faster and faster.

Then, with a pop, the glass shattered.

I shielded my eyes as shards of glass fell from the ceiling, casting a faint shadow across the room. I looked down at the shattered glass, and back up to the spor where the light bulb once stood. I stepped over, examining it closely.

There were still sparks.

Zack stood with his arms crossed, staring up at the light bulb with curiosity in his eyes. After what happened when Alex left, I called Zack. I explained what happened the minute he got into the room, and he linked to himself in thought.

"So, you're telling me that the light bulb just, exploded?" He asked.

"Yeah." I replied. Zack held his chin.

"Weird." He muttered. "That doesn't normally happen. The school is powered by a magical grid, the type of grid that doesn't just short circuit like that."

"I know." I replied. The room fell silent for a bit. Then a thought crossed my mind.

"Call me crazy..." I started. "...but I think the light exploding had something to do with Alex."

Zack shot me a skeptical look. "Excuse me?"

"Think about it. The bulb started to spark while the two of us were chatting, then it began surging with yellow sparks, but the minute I point it out to him, they faded." I explained. "And the minute he left the room, those same sparks appeared again and caused it to shatter. Don't you find that weird?"

"It could've been the power system going on the fritz though." Zack suggested.

"The school is powered by lightning magic, in a way that doesn't allow for any sort of short circuit to occur, remember?" I said.

"So what are you suggesting?"

I held my chin. "I think that Alex's magic might've overloaded the light bulb."

Zack hummed in thought. "But that's something only a lightning elemental could do. So how could..."

"Unless..." I trailed off. The room fell silent once again as the two of us thought.

"We might need to do a little more investigating." I said. Zack nodded his head.

Author's Notes

Writer's block has struck again. It normally doesn't take me this long to come up wuth an idea for a chapter, but man was it tough to come up sigh this one. Still, I'm happy sigh how it came out over all. And I think it's kinda obvious as to where this book is going. For Alex at least.
