Keefe
The rest of the weekend flashed by with no sign of Sophie. This happened to be why he was racing out the door 30 minutes before school even started. He wasn't happy because he had less time to style The Hair but everyone decided to meet up early to ambush her when she got to school.
They waited and waited but didn't see any sign of her. Keefe trudged to class defeated but then stopped abruptly in the doorway causing Fitz to crash into him.
Sitting in class was the one and only Sophie Foster.
He could only stand and gape and didn't move until Mr. Emery barked at them to move. Still in shock, he moved to sit. How did she get in without going through the front door? And if she did go in through the main entrance how did they not see her? She would be hard to miss, with her silky blond hair and beautiful eyes- STOP IT KEEFE. He snapped out of his thoughts and tried to catch her gaze but she wouldn't meet it. He tried everything, passing notes, whispering, kicking. Nothing worked.
When the bell went off he tried to catch her but she was gone in a flash. He tried for the rest of the day but nada. No one else had any luck either.
So he did what anyone else would do, he followed her.
He watched her hop into her sky-blue Bugatti and jumped on his motorcycle.
~Time Skip~
He watched as she pulled her car into a dirt road and climbed out. When she was out of sight, he waited a good few minutes before quickly climbing off his motorcycle and following her.
What he saw shocked him.
Sophie
The satisfying clash of swords filled the silence of the clearing. Ro was right, this was much better than training in a stuffy room.
The slight breeze hit her face, refreshing her and empowering her for more. She was about to attack again when suddenly, she felt a pair of eyes boring into her back.
Someone was watching them.
She signed (sign language) to Ro to finish training quickly. Ro gave a subtle nod in agreement.
They continued training for another 30 minutes before Ro decided she was good for the day.
"Wasn't that easy Blondie? You've started to focus again."
Sophie smiled in response but the truth was, right now she was more focused on finding the person watching them.
Ro picked up on that pretty quick and left her alone to not raise any suspicion. When Ro was gone, Sophie melted into the shadows and ran into the clearing, unsheathing her dagger and pushing it to the person's throat, almost dropping it when she saw their face.
Keefe
Keefe yelped when the felt he cool metal press against his throat. He looked up and saw Sophie's shocked expression and quickly pushed the dagger away from his throat.
He was about to say something before Sophie's shock melted away and was replaced with anger.
"Do you have any idea how stupid that was? I could've seriously hurt you."
"Yeah, I got that from the dagger that was pressed against my throat a few seconds ago." He joked but he quickly turned serious again.
"What were you doing here? Training with swords and daggers, I mean."
Sophie faltered, "I can't tell you that."'
He looked at her, his eyes pleading for her to tell him. "Does this have anything to do with your PTSD?"
She hesitated but nodded. (She's lying but Keefe doesn't know that.) She looked down as if she was ashamed.
"What happened with your parents?"
She looked up, her eyes glassy, and shook her head.
"Please Sophie, I can help you but you have to tell me what happened." He knew he shouldn't be pushing her but he had to know.
She started trembling and lowered herself to the ground. Keefe sat down next to her, not expecting her to say anything but rubbed comforting circles on her back like he did last time.
He jumped when she started speaking. "I shouldn't be telling you this, so whatever you do, you can't tell anyone." He nodded, crossing his fingers behind his back. He felt bad for lying but if he needed to, he would tell his friends.
She sucked in a deep breath when she had confrimation that he wouldn't tell. "When I was 5 years old I was in the car with my parents and my baby sister. I sat in my Mom's lap and she was tickling me. My Dad noticed and he took one hand off the steering wheel to tickle me to. It was only for a second but...." She trailed off and was started sobbing.
"It's ok, you're doing great. Keep going."
She stopped crying long enough to speak again.
"The car swerved and hit the one beside us and we both toppled over. I blacked out for a little but when I regained consciousness I was covered in debris. I climbed out and the first thing I saw was their bodies." Her voice caught here but she kept going. "I already knew they were dead, but I had to hope. I ran over to them and their bodies were even worse up close. So bloodied and bruised. Their blood stained my hands and I haven't been able to get those memories out of my head since."
Keefe was appalled. She was only 5 years old and she had to go through that. But that wasn't the worst part. Keefe expected Sophie to have another episode, but she looked like she was just numb. Her eyes didn't have the light they did the week before. They were cold and guarded like they were the day she arrived.
She must've sensed his worry because she looked up at him and smiled, restoring some of the twinkle in her eyes.
"Don't worry about me, Keefe. I can handle it. I've been through worse."
He didn't know what to say to that. What was worse than what she just said? He didn't want to seem rude though so he just smiled.
"I'll see you tomorrow Foster?"
He was dying on the inside to hear her response. He didn't want her to avoid them again so that's why he lit up when she replied,
"Of course Keefe, see you tomorrow," and with that, she walked away leaving Keefe to dwell in his thoughts.
1057 words!
The last couple chapters were kind of boring but I promise it's gonna pick up speed soon.
Happy Reading!
