~Alessandra~Later on, when the sun went down, when Leon and I finally woke up the house was illuminated with the smell of cooking food. It smelt wonderful.
I slowly rouse from the bean bag chair and urged Leon out of the room. He happily ran off.
I followed behind him smiling ear to ear. I was so happy to see my son. I felt like the happiest person alive. The happiest 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 alive.
Finally, I'm with my son again. Finally, I get to be a mother to him. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, I get to watch him grow.
I follow the smell of a variety of spices. My stomach rumbled and I realized I hadn't eaten all day and I was incredibly hungry.
I was lead toward the kitchen where I saw everyone but salth. He was no where to be seen.
Isabelle was drinking, who seemed to be in a better mood. Rose was watching me closely from behind her glass. And Eleanor was setting a plate of what to seemed to be mashed potatoes and a side of..stew?
But when Phia immediately dug her hands into the mashed potatoes and dipped it Into the stew, scooping it up and shoving it into her mouth. I immediately knew it wasn't potatoes.
I heard a laugh "You've never had FuFu before have you? You were thinking this was mashed potatoes?" Eleanor wiped her hands with a kitchen towel and threw it over her left shoulder.
"You're absolutely right" I shrugged and laughed "Is Fufu what she is eating? It looks delicious"
Before Eleanor could go to explain Rose butted in "FuFu is a mixture of cassava, plantains, and cocoyam. It's boiled and then pounded until it's very smooth, see"
Rose was standing by the stove as she dug her hand into the pot and pulled out the slightly stretchy "mashed potatoes"—-I feel embarrassed now for thinking fufu was mashed potatoes—and popped it into her mouth.
"Would you like some?" Rose went on to ask as she cleaned her fingers with her lips and turned back towards the stove where she shuffled towards the sink beside it to clean her hands.
"Yes, please" I went towards the kitchen table and sat in an empty chair.
"I hope you like spice"
I didn't involve myself in the conversation happening at the table. Instead I watched rose as she moved smoothly throughout the kitchen. I watched as She topped a plate high with FuFu and a side of stew with coated chicken wings.
Rose brings the plate to me instead of calling me to come get it like I thought she would. She set the plate down in front of me with just a few napkins.
Before I could ask about silverware rose cuts in "We don't use silverware when eating fufu, we also don't chew it but do whats comfortable for you we don't want you choking"
"Thank you" I said looking up at her from the table.
Her smile was intoxicating. Her eyes were bright with happiness, her dimples were deep. I don't think she had stopped smiling since we've gotten here. Being around the people she loves definitely brings out the happiness in her, I loved to see it.
It warmed my heart how she offered to make me a plate without me even asking. That was something to me, even if she wasn't anything to her at all but just being friendly.
Roses father called her from another room "Of course" she said to me before walking out the room to find her father. Yelling something as she turned the corner.
I wish her father hadn't called. I wish she would've sat beside me. Even if we didn't talk, even if It was awkward between us I just wanted to feel her presence next to me.
