The sedative has taken its full effect by now, blocking my nerves almost completely. But I still manage to somehow think straight. It's just the fear that is missing and I silently thank Josh for giving me the sedative.
I keep my eyes closed and only open them when the gurney comes to a halt. Blinding light envelops me and I quickly close them again.

"Hi Lucy. We are going to do a last minute check up, change you and get you all ready for the anesthesia. Just lay calm and let us do our job as quickly as possible."

I don't even open my eyes, only hum in approval. Something is being placed under and inside of my nose and suddenly oxygen floods my airways. I hadn't even realized that breathing was a problem but it sure as hell feels a lot better now.
I automatically begin taking bigger and deeper breaths.

"There you go." A gloved hand strokes over my forehead, setting the loose strands of hair where they belong. "You are doing so great, this will be over in no time."

Josh is already completely clothed in scrubs, a mask covering more than half of his face. Only his eyes suggest a little smile. I smile back.

Lying on the gurney, the sedative still lingering in my veins, I feel a mix of nervousness and fatigue. The room has that distinct sterile scent, a reminder of the impending laparoscopy. Just as my mind begins to wander, the door behind me opens and closes. Then a woman steps into my view.

"Hello, Lucy," she greets gently. "I'm Rosa Brentwood, a friend of Patrick's. I'll be helping with the anesthesia and during the surgery. How are you holding up?"

"Nervous, but I guess that's normal."

"Completely understandable. Now, I'll need you to change into a gown for the laparoscopy. It's a standard procedure, and we'll make sure you're comfortable and maintain your privacy."

A wave of discomfort washes over me.

"Change here? I mean, with you all in the room?"

Quickly, both Patrick and Josh turn away, respecting my modesty. Rosa speaks reassuringly, "I understand it may feel awkward, but we're professionals, Lucy. I'll guide you through it, and we'll make sure you're covered appropriately."

As Rosa assists me in changing, we engage in a soothing conversation, helping distract me from my vulnerability.

"Lucy, I know this can be overwhelming, but the team is here to ensure you're in the best hands. Before the surgery, Patrick will perform an ultrasound to get a detailed look at the current state of your ovary. It's a crucial step to guide the laparoscopy."

I nod, trying to focus on her words amidst the nerves that slowly come back to life with each second passing.

"Okay, an ultrasound. Got it."

She continues, her hands moving with practiced ease.

"And to monitor your vital signs during the procedure, we'll attach a pulse oximeter to measure your oxygen levels, an EKG to monitor your heart activity, and a blood pressure cuff to track your blood pressure. It's all routine, just to ensure we have a real-time understanding of how you're doing."

As Rosa speaks, I find a strange comfort in her explanations.

"So, these are just precautionary measures, right?"

"Exactly," she affirms, her eyes meeting mine with reassurance.

"It's about ensuring your safety and providing the best care possible. If there's anything you're unsure about or if you have questions, feel free to ask. We're here for you, Lucy."

She steps away and makes her way to the other side of the gurney.

"She's covered up guys."

Immediately Josh turns and walks back to me grabbing ahold of my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
