Rose woke up to her morning alarm. She willed it to cease its shrill blaring. When it didn't, she sighed and rushed out of bed.
No use delaying the inevitable, she thought as she dug through her drawers to look for an outfit.
"They just had to make jobs necessary, didn't they?" She grumbled as she tried on the third shirt after the other two didn't fit. Damn dryer, eating all her clothes. "Bloody idiots."
Finding a suitable outfit she begrudgingly made her way out the front door. Wouldn't want to be late, no that would be terrible.
"Bye mum! See you later" Rose yelled to her mother Jackie, who was sitting on the settee while watching tv.
"Bye darling, see you later!" Jackie called back, not even taking her eyes off the screen while sipping her tea.
Rose shook her head fondly at her mother as she ran out the door and took off to her job at Hendricks. It was probably the most boring job that she had ever had, but she needed money and the hours were comfortable. It was also the only job that she had ever had. Her friends in Secondary school all worked there during the summer and Rose was damned if she wasn't going to follow them there. Those girls used to be her whole world. They still were but in a different way, she didn't depend on them the same. Now they were just her favourite coworkers. The coworkers that had introduced her to Mickey, her boyfriend of about 2 years now. He was a fool, a damn fool. But she loved him all the same, he was her fool.
The day seemed to take forever while she was folding clothes and setting them back on shelves. She was starting to get worried that this was going to be an old boring day .
"This is an announcement. The store will be closing in five minutes. Thank you"
Rose and her friends started chatting while they headed outside. They had just been planning to head to the pub when a guard caught Rose's attention.
"Oi!" The guard yelled towards Rose and shook a bag at her impatiently. Rose rolled her eyes and took the bag, knowing that this would be Wilsons lottery money. The very money that he had been bragging about for ages.
Stomping her way to the lift she pushed the button harder than necessary. "I'm never going to hear the end of it." Rose talked to no one in particular. "'Rose,' he's going to say, I told you I told everybody. Everyone thought I was bonkers buying that ticket.' or ' I told you so, didn't I, I said I would win and look at me.' What a humble man. "
She grumbled to herself in the seclusion of the elevator, betting against herself if she knew how Wilson would respond. He never passed the opportunity to gloat.
When the lift came to a stop at the basement it dinged, ending Rose's monologue about humility, or the lack thereof, as she walked along the dim narrow hallways. "Wilson? Wilson, I've got the lottery money. Wilson, are you there?" Rose yelled out in the basement. The place had always given her the creeps.
