Laura got a remorseful feeling from the old girl as they landed back in London. "What's wrong?" She thought as she ran her hand along the console. She got the impression that the Tardis was saying sorry.
But it wasn't for Laura, it was for Rose.
Laura got the sneaking suspicion that the Tardis was taking them where they were needed, but not where they had wanted to go.
"Something happening today?" She thought and the Tardis's lights lit up brightly, then quickly dimmed when Rose walked in joining Laura and the Doctor in the console room.
"Ready?" They asked the blonde. She seemed in higher spirits than before. She was pretty blue after they had said goodbye to Charles Dickens.
The three of them had taken up a new tradition before bed. Well, before the girls went to bed seeing as the Doctor hardly slept. They would all gather in Laura's room as the Doctor would read aloud to them the Authors books.
It was a really nice routine, something that both of the girls looked forward to every night. They would all sit on Laura's bed against the headboard, the Doctor in the middle of them, while they listened to his soothing voice as he brought the story to life.
The best nights were the ones after they had finished the book but they weren't ready to say goodnight. The Doctor would tell stories about his childhood in Gallifrey, telling them all of the trouble he would get into.
It was really nice.
"Ready." Rose agreed excitedly and practically ran out the doors. Laura and the Doctor had to jog out the doors to catch up with her.
"How long have I been gone?" She asked.
The Doctor looked at his watch. "About twelve hours."
"Oh. Right, I won't be long. I just want to see my mum."
Laura and the Doctor leaned against the Tardis side by side. "What're you gonna to tell her?" Laura asked her. "I know I'd be worried if my teenage daughter didnae come home for the night." The Doctor nodded, agreeing with her statement.
"I don't know." She shrugged. "I've been to the year 5 billion and only been gone, what, twelve hours?" She crossed her arms and sighed. "No, I'll just tell her I spent the night at Shareen's. See you later." She gave them a wave as she walked off. Then she turned around, walking backwards, to motion at them both and the Tardis. "Oh, don't you guys disappear."
The Doctor laughed and turned to talk to Laura when he noticed that she wasn't beside him anymore. He whipped his head around the courtyard trying to find her. He held a hand to his chest and sighed in relief when he saw that she was standing next to a pillar.
He ran towards her and saw that she was looking at something, but he didn't care about the poster. He cared about he- the safety of his best friend, he corrected his inner thoughts.
"Red, don't do that," He said as he stopped beside her. "You scared me." He paused when he noticed her panicked look at him as she pointed to the poster.
On the pillar was a missing poster with Rose's face on it. In bright red letters at the top read, "Missing. Appeal for assistance. Can you help?"
Laura grabbed his hand before he could say anything and ran towards Rose's flat to warn her before she got inside the flat and scared her mother.
They were late. Twelve months late.
They ran up the stairs as quickly as they could. Making it to the flat, the Doctor threw open the door and Laura ran inside. "Rose! It's not twelve hours! It's twelve months!" She paused when she saw Rose holding her sobbing mother, tears running down her own face.
