Summary: You finally meet your shower singing buddy in person. Written for @Riverway1234 I hope it's everything you hoped for and more.
Trigger warnings: none
Ah, Thursday, your favourite day of the week. You got off early on Thursday afternoons, which gave you time to enjoy a cup of coffee at your favourite coffee shop.
"Thanks!" you smile at the barista, grabbing your drink from the counter. You head over to your favourite spot, by one of the large front windows, and sit down. You pull out your sketchbook, and pop in an earbud. You glance out the window, trying to pick a subject.
You settle on a tall, blond man walking towards the coffee shop. He's not bad looking, you suppose. He glances up from his phone, and you sigh a little. Not bad at all.
You start to sketch, glancing up at him every few seconds, trying to memorize his features before he passes your window. But he doesn't. Instead, he enters the coffee shop and gets in line.
You decide you want to hurry and finish his portrait fast, in case he catches you looking at him. You continue sketching, even when he finds a seat at a table a little ways from your own.
You're nearly done, and glance up one last time, only to find him looking back at you. You flush, your cheeks burning.
He seems a little confused, so you hold up your sketchbook so he can see why you were looking at him. He smiles, and gets up. Oh, his smile was adorable.
Your heart pounds as he gets closer, but all he says is "Can I join you?" while gesturing at the seat across from you.
"Uh, sure," you say, a little embarrassed. He gives you another adorable smile, and sits down.
"You don't need to be embarrassed," he says, " I'm an artist myself, I completely understand." Something about his voice seems familiar, but you can't quite tell with your music on. You quickly turn it off, trying to seem less stand-offish.
"My name's Steve, by the way," he tells you, holding out his hand.
"Oh, I'm Y/n," you answer, "pleasure to meet you." You shake his hand, and then look down at your sketchbook, unsure of what to do next.
"Y/n, that's pretty. You don't need to turn your music off, I can leave." Steve says, moving to get up.
"Oh, no. Don't worry about it," you say, not really wanting him to leave," I don't mind if you stay."
He gives you yet another smile, and you look down at your sketch, deciding you need to change his expression. The one you had drawn was the expression he had had when crossing the street, which wasn't bad, but you much preferred his smile. You start to erase, and then draw again.
When you glance up at him, you pause. He had pulled out a sketchbook too, and was drawing a face. He glances up at you, and is a little startled to see you already looking at him.
"I wanted to return the favor," he says, showing you his sketch. It's you, looking down at your book, a slight smile on your face. You laugh, and thank him, then turn back to your own art.
After a little while of drawing in silence, you realize he's started to hum something. At first, you can't quite make it out over the chatter, but soon realize it's "Love is an Open Door". What a coincidence, you thought, but didn't really think about it too much. You start to softly hum along, and you can see him look up at you out of the corner of your eye.
His humming turns into quiet singing, and so does yours. You finish off the song, and laugh. He looks at you, a little intrigued.
"What?" you question, noticing the look on his face.
"It's nothing," he says, "you just seem oddly familiar. Have we ever met before?"
"I don't think so," you answer, "I think I'd remember meeting you." He laughs, and you immediately turn bright red again, not realizing you had said the last part out loud.
An alarm on your phone goes off, letting you know you should be headed home.
You start to pack up your things, and tell Steve, "I should probably get going."
He agrees, saying he should be getting home too. You both stand and walk towards the door. Instead of turning in opposite directions like you thought you would, he turned the same way as you.
"You live this way too?" He asks, and you nod. "Maybe that's why you seem familiar, we've probably crossed paths a few times without even realizing it." You agree with him, and then fall into an easy conversation as you make your way back to your apartment building.
"No way," he says when you turn to walk up the steps, "We live in the same building too?"
"It would seem that way," you laugh. He laughs too, and starts up the front steps after you.
"What floor?" he asks you, when you both walk toward the elevator.
"Three," you tell him, and watch as his face drops in shock, "No way, you too?"
"We've been living on the same floor this whole time, and I only meet you today? Seems like wasted time in my opinion." You stare. Is he flirting with you?
"That is really crazy," you agree, "but I am glad we met today." The elevator dings, and you both step out.
"Which number are you?" he asks curiously.
"272," you tell him, "Are you going to tell me you're in 273?"
He laughs. "Not quite. I'm in 271."
You stare at him, shocked. "Honestly, this is not how I thought we would meet, if we ever met at all." He looks at you, confused. "Come on, Steve. We've been singing together for months, and all you're gonna do is stare?"
"Your the one I've been singing with?" he gapes, "No wonder you seemed so familiar."
You both laugh again. You turn towards your apartment, but pause when he says, "Wait, Y/n."
You look back at him, "Yeah?"
he blushes a little, but says, "I'd like to see you again, if that's okay."
You smile gently, "I'd love that." His face breaks out into a grin.
"It's a date!"
