Summary: *gasp* is that an enemies to lovers arc I see in your future?? Also it's mostly backstory, sorry.

Trigger Warnings: Um, it's hinted at an abusive past, but never goes into details.

Clint POV

I groan, and open my eyes. Everything hurts, and my memory is fuzzy. What happened? My vision is a little blurry, so I blink to try and clear it. I'm in a dimly lit room, but instead of being tied up like I expected, I was just laying there on the crappy cot.

The door creaks open and a figure walks in. It takes a second, but as soon as they come into the light, I recognize them as the criminal from the roof.

"Ah, good. You're awake," they say, walking over to the cot. I try to say something, but I can't seem to move anything but my eyes.

"Oh, yes. The sedative should wear off soon, and then we can get started," they inform me. I'm still trying to puzzle out what exactly happened on the roof, when they sit down on the edge of the cot.

"Believe it or not, Barton, but I don't actually intend to hurt you. The sedative was merely a precaution, to make sure you didn't alert anyone to our whereabouts." they smile gently at me, but I'm hesitant to believe them. I mean, would you? I can feel the numbness in my fingers begin to wear off, and they twitch involuntarily. Of course, my captor immediately notices this.

"Well, I better get explaining, huh? It's not a long story, but I'll spare you most of the unnecessary details. You, no doubt, know who I am, or else you wouldn't have tried to kidnap me." They stand up and start to pace the room as they tell their story.

"I had an unfortunate upbringing involuntarily being trained to be an assassin since the moment I could walk. Actually, your friend and I are very similar, like it or not. She was fortunate enough to have someone like you."

I finally am able to talk, "you're a red room widow?"

They laugh. "No, I'm much worse." That was not helping me trust them at all, which they must have sensed, because they were quick to continue their story.

"At first, I didn't see anything wrong with what they were doing, and they told me I only killed bad people, so I felt like a hero. The first time I ever got caught, they told me the only reason the police were mad was because killing was against the law, but they weren't actually mad at me for killing my victim. I was punished, of course, but at that point, I went right along with it. I didn't even think about the fact that what they were doing to me wasn't normal, because it was all I had ever known." They pause to give me a sad smile.

"As time went on, they began to trust me with larger missions, ones that required multiple days of time. I was proud to have been promoted to this position, but as I began to spend more time out in the world, I began to realize that maybe I wasn't as good as I had thought. I was very good at hiding these thoughts from them."

I couldn't quite place the emotion in their voice when they talked about 'them', a sort of angry longing, maybe?

"I hadn't stopped thinking of these people as my family, but I definitely started to realize we were not functioning like families I had seen out there in the world. The worst decision my captors ever made was allowing me to go to a real public school. I was a little too old for the grade they had me placed in, but I blended in fine, and they lied about my age on the school files. They gave me a fake name. Up until then, I had only ever been a number. Number 1. I'm the first of my kind.  At the time, I didn't think much about it, but someone else already had that name. I replaced them, and I didn't even know it" Their voice broke, and either they were doing a very good acting job, or they actually felt bad about that. Also, I could wiggle my toes.

They clear their throat before continuing. "Sorry, I'm not getting to the important parts. The day I turned 16, I dropped out of school. The files will say it was my freshman year, which it was, but I'm older than my grade, remember? Anyways, I dropped out, and completely disappeared from the world. I set everything up, my captors would think I had died, and everyone else would think my family and I had simply moved to a different country."

"I was gone for a long time, until a few months ago. I had no money, no family, no life outside of my prison. But I waited, and I watched. I watched you and your friends fight the Chitauri. I watched SHIELD. Waiting. See, I know something you don't, which is why I brought you here."

They walk back over and lean closer to me.

"HYDRA has infiltrated SHIELD, and they're going to bring it down from the inside."
