❝ It annoyed me that I could act like such a carefree child, and it made me want to lash out at the weeds, who knew nothing but to grow taller. I wanted to try to be a good girl.

For the first time in more than a week, Tempest would be attending her class's meeting with Dr. Gaul. The Sunday morning was unusually warm, prompting the girl to immediately remove her university jacket upon exiting her home.
The previous night marked the first time she had slept in her own bed since the accident. Following the interviews, she pleaded with her father to allow her to return home. Overjoyed by her tributes outstanding performance, he disregarded any concerns and eagerly whisked her away in the car.
This morning, she dedicated hours to carefully tending to her injuries, adamantly refusing any assistance from her hand maiden. Despite the heat, she chose to wear pants instead of her school skirt, in order to spare others from the unsettling sight. Furthermore, she believed that openly displaying her injuries would only serve to portray her as weak.
The fervent whispers of the students upon her arrival in the laboratory were impossible for her to ignore. Some bestowed upon her sympathetic glances, acknowledging her injury, while others cast envious glares, consumed by jealousy over her triumphant acquisition of sponsors prior to the games. However, the most astonishing of all was Coriolanus, for he refused to even meet her gaze.
Perplexed by this unexpected behavior, Tempest approached Coriolanus, positioning herself beside him. She discreetly stole a few fleeting glances in his direction, careful not to arouse suspicion, yet long enough to witness the wrathful snarl that marred his face. They had been fine, more than fine, they had been exceptional! What could have transpired to cause such a drastic shift?
Yearning to inquire about his sudden change, Tempest found herself thwarted as Dr. Gaul and Dean Highbottom abruptly entered the room, ready to commence the evaluation of the interviews that had taken place the previous night.
Both Coriolanus and the District Twelve girl, as well as Tempest and her tribute, had completely dominated the competition. It was undeniable that Reaper had excelled in securing an impressive number of sponsors the previous night. Could this be the reason behind Coriolanus' evident displeasure towards Tempest? Was it because her tribute had outperformed his own? It was simply inconceivable to her that he would behave so tactlessly over such a trivial matter.
As they watched the report on Capitol TV, engaging in a discussion about the betting scene, Dr. Gaul interjected with a thought-provoking statement, "Look at all these individuals, sending bread to a district boy in love with a Capitol girl. What lesson can be derived from this?"
Tempest couldn't help but recoil inwardly. For goodness' sake, Reaper did not harbor any romantic feelings towards her! Was this truly what the Capitol believed?
"At the dogfights, I've seen people back mutts that can barely stand," Festus told her. "People love a long shot."
"People love a good love story, more like," said Persephone, showing her dimples. "What is more romantic than star crossed lovers?"
