"So you're the little shit, hm?"

Being in the secret police made me learn two things: firstly, in this line of work you can't be lenient or show mercy, secondly, harsh or crude language sounds threatening and asserts dominance. I keep in mind both things whilst in the interrogation room.

"Lester Barnes, do you know why you're here?" I stare at him, waiting for his answer. There is nothing for him to say of course. He, like many, is just a lowlife criminal who was waiting for his turn to showcase his discontent recklessly.

"Very well, I'll tell you then, you were caught trying to send information to the West. Via Morse code. And then you were caught in a public restroom trying to catch radio waves from the West."

"..."

He, like many, looks at me with angry eyes and doesn't dare say a word. Unfortunately for him, I'm quite advantageous in this situation anyway. I, Anya, am an esper, I have the ability to read minds (I have pride in my ability to read minds).

I close my eyes and try to concentrate. It gets annoying when there are too many people around you, for there are too many inner monologues and people think all the time. Soon enough, I am victorious in finding his thoughts. (This is why I prefer not having too many people in an interrogation room)

"Lieutenant, what do you mean by saying he's innocent?" one of the officers chases after me, I think his name is... Jared...? "Not now, Jefferson..." I mumble. "But-He-"
"Whatever I say is the truth." I say in a threatening tone, as if to warn him to not provoke me further. Nothing is worse than a provoked and angered esper. (I will not hesitate in revealing all your secrets.)

"..."

"Yes... Ma'am..." he mutters, bowing his head.

I look down at the red folder in my arms. It has his name and details written on it. I flip open the pages. Name: Lester Barnes, Age: 18, Birth Date: 13/1/1975, Blood Group: O-...

What did this kid even write? I can't help but wonder what was so very threatening.

"..."

"Lieutenant... Is there something wrong-?" One of the officers ask hesitantly,
"The only thing that kid managed to send to the West was the word 'hamburger'..." I sigh in frustration, "And here I was thinking someone finally caught the mole."

"So, he has nothing to do with the disappearance of the official government documents?"
"Apparently not. Hell, he has nothing to do with anything really." I sigh.

Well, another day, another defeat. World peace is going to have to wait for another day.

"Lester, You're free to go home kid," as he hears those words, his ears perk up and he sighs in relief. "Thank you miss-?"
"Lieutenant Forger..." I smile, he's a kid after all. "Did you... tell my parents...?" He asks reluctantly. Poor guy, he'd been stressing on this question all afternoon, what would his parents think. (I know so because his thoughts were audible from across the other room)

"Well... they must know..."
"Oh... Damn it!" He puts his head down bashfully. That only makes me feel more sorry for him. "Don't worry..." I say, "I made some... adjustments to the story..."
The moment he hears that he jolts up straight and beams in delight. "Oh thank you-!"

"But... of course, we told them some stuff that couldn't really be hidden..."

"..."

"Bet they're pissed..." He mumbles to himself. "I wouldn't be surprised if they are..." I whisper back, just so it's audible to the both of us.

"Lester! My baby!" A short, blonde woman bawls, a shorter man with a receding hairline follows suit as they both reunite with their relatively taller son. "We were so worried! Oh! Thank heavens you're safe!" She hugs him (strangles him) tightly. How sweet.

"Well then..." I say, clearing my throat as Jeffery (Or Jefferson, Or Jared) hands me the red folder. "Hello..." I say, "I apologise for interrupting this heartwarming reunion... but, we still have a lot to discuss..."
The father is the first to notice me and motions the other two to listen to me.

"What your son did, comes with a lot of consequences..." I could hear Lester gulp.
"But... we've decided to let it slide, since he's a student, we're not planning on putting this on his criminal record, nor are we planning on arresting him-"
"Oh Thank you! Thank you Office-"
"I'm not done..." I say, somewhat annoyed by his mother's impatience, "usually, we don't really give a damn here about age, or the occupation... everyone is equal before the law, but, your son wasn't exactly doing anything suspicious... so..."

"..."

"You're free to go..." I say, nodding to Lester, "And listen... Lovers come and go, but family stays... so.. Try not to get into trouble again, we won't let you off very easily, and as for the fine, it has to be deposited by a minimum of fifteen days, am I clear?"

They thanked me once again before leaving. "Lieutenant, How do you know he's innocent?" Jesper asks me (Or was his name Jared... Well, his existence is very indifferent to me...)
"Because Jermey, What I say, is the truth. I can read people like an open book."
"Well, why'd he really try to contact the West?"
"He thought it'd be funny." I say.
"How reckless... Children these days..." Jared murmurs.

Wrong. He contacted the West because of his girlfriend, who he met in Hungaria. Well, their relationship isn't going anywhere for a very long time. Unless fate says so. Family stays forever. How ironic for those who have no one.

Funny how I was the one who told him family stays forever. If that was the case. How come mine was torn apart?
