"Killian, when is the next auction being held?"
Killian, who was compiling scattered paperwork, turned to look at me. He blinked a couple times before answering, "Sir, did that woman really intrigue you?"
I know who he was referring to, Anya.
"I want to know who she really is," I nod, answering in a very serious tone, "she looked familiar, like someone I knew," My voice felt far-away as did the hazy memories of springtime at Eden. My school years went by so quickly, I didn't realise it back then but perhaps I do now, I needed those school years the most, perhaps, I still need them now.
"Forgive me for being rude, Sir, but– I'm afraid it's quite absent minded of you to dwell on such things," "I-" I let out a sigh. Of course, we were at work and my question must've been abrupt.
"Sorry Killian." I mumble before letting out a heavy sigh and going back to skimming through paperwork. "What are these?" I say, as my eyes go onto a couple papers with the Hotel seal on it. "Ah yes, sir, the hotel's tenth anniversary is coming up, I sought to remind you however you looked quite tired-"
"Oh shit!" I gasped, "I forgot!""Not to worry sir," Killian said coolly," I've managed some of the work." I heaved a sigh of relief as we carried on with more paperwork. Frustrated with rereading the same report over and over, I looked over at Killian and asked, "Did you find out who she is at least?"
Killian looked at me in bewilderment for a while, he stared at me blankly for a couple of seconds before regaining his composure. With a small 'ahem' he nodded "She is a civil servant, sir in fact, she studied from Eden academy herself," my heart started beating at a faster rate, I felt it loudly thumping against my chest, "How'd you come to know?"
"Evelyne Gaelord," he smiled, "she knows everything."
Well, of course she did. In a hierarchical society like the one in Berlint composed of four main groups (whether one admits or not), the lower class, middle class, nouveau riche and the Berlint Elite.
Evelyne Gaelord, the chairwoman of the Lady Patriots soceity (happened to accept it with the courtesy of my mother) knew of all the society's major gossip, nothing slipped past her ear. In order to attain the gossip or erase it to keep a good tab on society, one had to bribe her but–
"Oh I threatened her," Killian's mouth curved into a smile at the look of the visibly shocked expression on my face. "Wh-what?"
Although this was not a big deal and wasn't really concerned around me, I couldn't help but sputter. "Killian–bloody hell..."
"That's what she gets for tipping off news reporters about–you know what," he looks at me darkly. I nod as I remember the crowd of reporters swarming into my office building claiming I was gay for my assistant.
"She's fucked in the head, why the hell did my mother pass down that position to a twenty year old brat?" I shook my head in annoyance as Killian snorted.
"Whilst that language is inappropriate for work, I'll let it slide–" a voice spoke from the other side of the room, there stood leaning against the doorway– "Blackbell," I snarled, "Desmond,"she responded coolly, "heard you bitching about Evie,"
"So what if I was?"
"Didn't your father not teach you manners, Desmond?" Blackbell walked towards my table and put her hand on it for support, looking me in the eye, "That's ironic coming from you," I scoffed, "were you not eavesdropping on our conversation minutes ago?"
"I just happened to stop by at the same time your gossip session was commencing," Blackbell snickered. I frowned at her indecency and my eyes travelled down to her hands, she was holding a letter with Eden academy's seal on it, "what's that?"
"This? Oh yes, I was coming to ask you if you've got the letter alumni meet being held, seems like you've not,"
"What?!"
"That's impossible, I must've gotten it somewhere," I mutter in confusion, "Ding Ding ding!" She imitated the sound of a bell as she handed me the letter, "That's because I've come to personally deliver it."
"Oh." I look over at Killian and then back at her as she beams as if every insult she's ever thrown at me was unintentionally offensive. "Thanks I suppose..." I nod, touching the crinkly texture of the paper, "No problem, Desmond, oh and come this time alright?" I felt a note of urgency in her voice "It'll be fun and you need to stop acting like a workaholic!"
"Alright alright," I sigh, waving my hand as I motion for Killian to escort her out. Recently, Blackbell and I have been developing a more decent relationship for the sake of further collaborations and moral decency, it's all business but I suppose she's become more tolerable these past few years.
"Don't forget to leave your senseless pride behind!" She joked as she walked out of the room.
I take that all back, I think to myself.
As the door shuts and I'm left alone in my office for a bit, I look down and brush my thumb across the golden seal stamp.
Those round, green eyes.
I'll find you.
