FINE LINE - BACK IN TIME

The sound of steady chatter slowly brought Mavis out of unconsciousness. The first thing she noticed was a new applied pressure wrapped around her body. Opening her eyes, everything was blurred, the dark Hospital Wing slowly going in and out of focus.

Mavis' body felt groggy, each part of her begging for mercy. The utmost pain came from her ribs, the feeling coming to a point of being unbearable. Unable to keep her eyes open any longer, Mavis complied with the pain, opting to lay still, listening to the distant voices.

"Shocking business... shocking," someone said, "miracle none of them died... never heard the like... by thunder, it was lucky you were there, Sape..."

"Thank you, Minister," Snape's voice sounded.

"Order of Merlin, Second Class, I'd say. First Class, if I can wangle it!" the Minister of Magic said.

"Thank you very much indeed, Minister," Snape's voice made Mavis' face scrunch up in distaste, though she quickly returned back to neutral - when did she break her nose?

"Nasty cut you've got there... Black's work, I suppose?" the Minister asked.

"As a matter of fact, it was Potter, Minister..." Snape said.

"No!" the Minister exclaimed in shock.

"Black had bewitched them, I saw it immediately," Snape lied. "A Confundus Charm, to judge by their behaviour. They seemed to think he was innocent. They weren't responsible for their actions. On the other hand, their interference might have permitted Black to escape... they obviously thought they were going to catch Black single-handed."

Mavis let out a small scoff, listening to the words pouring out of Snape's mouth. Almost laughing at the lies he was telling.

"They've got away with a great deal before now..." Snape continued. "I'm afraid it's given them a rather high opinion of themselves... and of course Potter has always been allowed an extraordinary amount of licence by the Headmaster -"

"Ah, well, Snape..." Fudge said. "Harry Potter, you know... we've all got a bit of a blind spot where he's concerned."

"And yet - is it good for him to be given so much special treatment?" Snape questioned. "Personally I try to treat him like any other student. And any other student would be suspended - at the very least - for leading his friends into such danger."

"You mustn't forget about Black - the younger one. She's been a menace since she joined this school. Causing havoc left, right and centre and most likely influencing the Potter boy. Consider, Minister; against all school rules - after all the precautions put in place for their protection - out of bounds, at night, consorting with a werewolf and a murderer - and I have reason to believe they have been visiting Hogsmeade illegally, too -"
