FINE LINE - THE THIRD TASK
On the way back from Dumbledore's office, Mavis couldn't help the worried feeling buried deep inside her stomach. With each step she took the feeling became stronger and stronger.
Mavis didn't say a word to Harry as they walked through the corridors back to the Gryffindor Tower. She didn't know what to say. With each event leading up to the third task left her on edge. At this point, Mavis' head was reeling yet she was unable to shake a single thought.
Before either Mavis or Harry knew it, they were standing in front of the portrait door. After Harry muttered the password, the portrait opened and the two stepped into the common room.
To their surprise, Hermione and Ron sat opposite the fire, waiting for them to return. The two turned their heads as footsteps got closer and immediately stood up at the sight of Mavis and Harry.
Ron let out a plethora of questions, not even breathing between each one whereas Hermione wordlessly made her way over to Mavis and engulfed her into a hug. Mavis gladly reciprocated it, burying her head in Hermione's shoulder.
Once the two pulled away, Hermione placed her hands on Mavis' face. The bushy haired girl could practically feel the worry that radiated off of Mavis.
"I'm okay," Mavis said softly. "I promise."
Hermione didn't say anything in reply, only pressing a delicate kiss on Mavis' forehead. The young Black let the warmth of Hermione's lips spread throughout her body and for the first time that day, all the worry had seemed to have dissipated.
Mavis let Hermione lead her over to the sofa where the two sat side by side, their fingers interlocked, watching as Ron continued to pester Harry about answers. After a little while, Ron finally let Harry breathe, the two sitting with Mavis and Hermione.
Everything Mavis and Harry had seen in the Pensieve, nearly everything Dumbledore had told and shown them afterwards, they had now shared with Hermione and Ron. The four sat up late in the common room once again that night, talking it all over.
Ron stared into the common room fire and Mavis thought she saw him shiver slightly, even though the evening was warm. Hermione had not spoken for ten minutes, sitting with her forehead in her hands, staring at her knees. Mavis thought she, too, looked as though she could have done with a Pensieve.
"Rita Skeeter," she muttered finally.
"How can you be worrying about her now?" Ron said, in disbelief.
"I'm not worrying about her," Hermione said to her knees. "I'm just thinking..."
"About what?" Harry wondered.
"Just..." Hermione trailed off before looking down at her watch. "We haven't done any practising!" she said, looking shocked. "We were going to do the Impediment Jinx! We'll have to really get down to it tomorrow! Come on, you two, you need to get some sleep!"
