FINE LINE - THE BEGINNING

Mavis' body hit the ground with a soft thud. She laid there staring at the sky above but she didn't move, nor did she breathe.

The crowd was silent, at least, to Mavis it was. She couldn't make out the screams of terror, the gasps of horror nor the pleading father begging for his son back.

She couldn't hear a thing. It was as if Mavis was stuck in a trance. She continued to stare at the sky, blurry outlines of people hovered over her, yet, no matter how hard Mavis tried, she couldn't make out who they were.

But then, as if Mavis was pulled back into the nightmare that was reality, she heard a voice. Just one voice. Hermione's.

"Maeve! Mavis!" she screamed, running from the stands, pushing everyone out of the way. "Mavis!"

The young Black soon felt someone grip onto her shoulder but it wasn't Hermione. Mavis knew that wasn't her touch.

"Maeve?" a trembling voice said, the tone fuzzy as it reached Mavis' ears. "Please wake up. I can't lose you."

"Harry, you can't help her now," another voice said, and Mavis could just make it out to be Dumbledore. "It's over. Let go."

"No! I can't. I won't," Harry sobbed, shaking Mavis hoping to get her to wake up. "Maeve!"

"Please, Harry," Dumbledore said, bending down to pull Harry away from Mavis.

"No! She sacrificed herself for me!" Harry said, keeping close to Mavis.

"Hagrid?" Dumbledore asked, looking up for some help but as he spotted the half-giant he saw Hermione already in his arms, struggling to get out of his grip.

"Keep everybody in their seats," Fudge said to McGonagall and Snape. "Two students have been killed."

"She saved me, she -" Harry cried.

"It's alright Harry. She's home," Dumbledore said softly. "She's home."

"Mavis!" Hermione screamed, finally getting out of Hagrid's grasp.

She made a beeline for the young Black, dropping to her knees beside Mavis. Hermione let out a loud sob, pushing Mavis' hair out of her face, finally having a look at her.

"You promised me, Maeve... you promised me," Hermione sobbed, her head falling onto Mavis' chest.

"Miss Granger -" Dumbledore tried.

"No!" Hermione shouted, looking up at the headmaster, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Miss Granger, please," he tried again.

"No," Hermione's voice broke as she shook her head. "I can't."

"Please," Dumbledore said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "If you could give me a moment, I would like to try something."
