The sound of the hospital machines beeping is all Camila can focus on while her older brother stands outside talking to doctors. While the sound of the beeping every few seconds may be annoying to others, the calm and steady pace it takes is what reminds her that her fathers still alive. She woke up this morning to the sound of erratic beeping and instantly shout out of the cot that she sleeps on next to her fathers bed, only to find out it was a patient in the next room over. Her fathers chest is rising and falling, and watches him sleep with narrowed eyes. Not out of anger, but out of worry.
"Hey...little bear? He's fine alright? Let him sleep. I'm sure he can feel your eyes burning into his even in his dreams." Her brother attempts a small chuckle, but it turns into a sigh when she doesn't look away.
They've been in this hospital for a little over a week. Well, Camila has. She refused to leave her fathers side even for school, instead choosing to tell him that school was off for the week and let all the calls about her skipping go to her neglectful mother. They wouldn't dare call her dad. Not after they learned he's fighting for his life right now. Fighting for it is a strong word actually, more like letting it slip away. His daughter wants to be mad at him, to scream and tell him to take the chemo the doctors are offering. Part of her knows it won't work, its very rare it does against stage four lung cancer. It's not exactly terminal, but after days of research, Camila knows its rare someone comes back from this.
Her brother stands up from his seat next to hers and it's only then does she look at him. "Let's go."
"Where?" She asks. "Lila will be back from school soon." Their oldest sister is to much of a good girl to ever think about skipping school, and the boy in front of her has only skipped twice in his life. This time included.
"On a walk. We need some fresh air. Dad will probably be awake when we come back." The thirteen year old seems hesitant, so he taps his chin in thought and says, "Don't make me wake him up and tell him you've been skipping. You know he'll be mad." That's all she needs to stand up and grab her coat.
With one last look at her father machine tracking his heartbeat, she follows her brother out of the room and begins to walk to the elevator. "I don't feel good about this. What if something happens to him?" The 15 year old boy just nods towards a doctor who smiles warmly their way. "We're in a hospital bear. He's safe. If something happens, they'll help him." He says. Jude's always been good at comforting people, especially his youngest sister.
They get in the elevator and hit the button for the ground floor. He takes off his cap, putting it on her hair. When they get to the ground floor, it opens to show a woman sobbing in a wheelchair, a man standing next to her and telling her reassuring things. Her belly is round and her chest is moving up and down as she breaths erratically. She looks ready to scream, and Camila pulls her brother out of the elevator right as it closes and the woman does. "I'm never giving birth. She's has much more strength then I ever will." The little girl mumbles as she walks closer to the entrance.
The air is cold when they get outside, it being mid January and snowing. Camila's converse don't offer much against the freezing cold temperatures, and she can feel her feet basically freezing off as they walk down the road, getting farther and farther from the hospital as anxiety about leaving her dad in there grows more and more. "What did the doctors say?" She suddenly remembers to ask, and its silent for a moment before the older boy says, "They um....they were just-just telling me about his condition. He's fine." He'd never lie to her, especially about something like this so she takes his answer and sends him a small thankful smile.
They walk a bit more before stopping at a bench, him pointing over at the small pond across the lake. "You remember when your heart problems were acting up again so we had to come here, and Lila and I stole a duck from there to sneak in for you. We got caught and in trouble but it was worth it to see you smile." She smiles at the memory, nodding his way. "And dad was pissed, but he also said he was proud of you for making me happy."
