Krithika looked out her window. It was raining cats and dogs. Tamil Nadu Weatherman had issued a red alert for Chennai, and she silently thanked Indra Deva for the excuse to stay under her covers, pretending she didn't have an office to go to.

After her nasty showdown with Xavier and her dramatic storming out, she'd taken a full week off.

She grabbed her phone and pulled up the Xhasis employee portal, quickly logging five days of sick leave. Technically, it wasn't a lie—she was pretty damn sick of Xavier, and after crying herself into a swollen, exhausted mess, she'd actually come down with a fever and a splitting headache. Her roommate had brought her meals—the awful food from the PG chef—while trying to console her every time she burst into another round of tears.

So much for being a strong, independent woman, she thought bitterly.

Two emotions overshadowed everything else—rage and fear. She realized she'd been impulsive, maybe downright stupid, to go head-to-head with Xavier. He was the damn CEO. He could end her career with the snap of his fingers.

But she sure as hell wasn't about to go crawling back with an apology, either.

She tossed her phone somewhere on the bed, wiping fresh tears from her eyes. Her eyelids felt like sandbags, and she pulled the blanket tighter, curling up into herself. She was waiting for the one notification, the one email.

They're going to fire me.

The thought sent her over the edge, and she broke down, hugging herself as if she could squeeze out the fear. Her sobs grew louder, filling the room with the bitter taste of defeat. She felt herself sinking further and further, unable to stop the feeling that she'd hit rock bottom.
