[present day]
The Pogues didn't hang around much longer after that. Pope decided to stay with his dad, so the other five Pogues climbed back into the Twinkie, and headed home.
John B and Sarah were in the front, Kiara, JJ and Abigail in the back. Abby had her arms wrapped around herself, her head looking out the window as her friends talked around her. She couldn't bring herself to contribute, or even listen to them.
All she could think about was Amanda's journal.
What the hell could Malcolm want with a journal so bad, that they'd threaten and attack her so brutally? None of it makes any sense, especially since Malcolm knew she wasn't speaking to her mother, why would he think she knows anything?
Well, there's really only one way to find out.
"Can you make this left?" Abby asks, speaking up for the first time since they left the Chateau.
"Uhh, yeah." John B says from the driver's seat, the van slowing down at the stop sign. "Why?"
"I need you to drop me off at home."
The van comes to complete stop, all four teens turning their attention to the red-haired girl on the back bench.
"You wanna go home?" Kiara asks, shifting next to her.
Abby shrugs, furrowing her brows when she turns her head away from the window and sees all eyes on her. "Yeah."
She watches as Kiara communicates wordlessly with the boys and Sarah, and she sighs. "I don't think that's a good idea, Abby." Sarah says, shaking her head.
"You were attacked last night, you shouldn't be alone in an empty house." John B adds.
"Guys, I'm tired and sore, I just wanna sleep in my own bed tonight." She tells them, before her eyes land on JJ. "Alone."
John B and Sarah glance at each other, picking up on the weird vibe between their two friends right now. They noticed the distance between them all day, but neither one of them thought anything of it, until now.
John B gets honked at from an impatient car behind them, so he makes the left turn.
"Someone should probably stay with you." JJ says, leaning forward. "Just in case—"
"I don't need a babysitter." She says, harshly.
JJ clenches his jaw. "Those guys could try and come after you again, Abby."
