Samiksha's eyes widened in disbelief as if the sight of her best friend standing outside her door was too surreal to be true. She thought it must be a dream, but the fleeting thought vanished the moment Xavier pulled her into his arms, wrapping her in a tight bear hug.
"Xav!" she gasped, her hands trembling as she tried to return his embrace. "I missed you. I missed you so much!"
Yes, she had missed him—more than words could express. For years, her heart had been weighed down by the painful memory of his divorce, a shadow that had tainted all the joyful memories of him. She had missed laughing at his goofy jokes, his mischievous grin, his unrelenting passion for engineering, and his obsession with her mother's Puran Poli. Suddenly, all those memories came rushing back, overwhelming her with emotion.
And Xavier had missed her just as much. He had missed the way her small hands would pat his head, her eyes lighting up with laughter at his jokes, the way her adorable face would scrunch up when he or Alisha teased her about her "bronze man." He had missed everything about her—the girl who had been his closest friend, his confidante, his little Iksha.
A grin tugged at his lips as he felt the warmth of her tears soaking through his shirt. His little doll hadn't changed at all—still the emotional, sweet soul he had known, still the crybaby who wore her heart on her sleeve.
"Hey! And here I thought I was the only one my darling loved the most," Krishna mischievously commented, standing beside him.
Just under a week ago, Xavier had received a call from Krishna. He had asked him to help surprise Samiksha for her birthday, and Xavier had been thrilled to agree. After all, they were both in the same city, and it felt like too much of an opportunity to pass up.
Samiksha had been angry with him, but Xavier had not attempted to make amends as well. He had let the distance between them grow, unsure of how to bridge the gap after everything that had happened. Doubts gnawed at him—would she even want to see him? But those doubts evaporated the moment their eyes met. In a split second, he saw the raw truth of her feelings—a love that had never faded.
Samiksha ignored her husband's teasing remark and shot Xavier a pointed glare. "Tu mala visarlas, hmm? You never missed me, did you?"
He stared at his tiny friend, a fond smile spreading across his face. Her scowl only made her look cuter—how was that even possible?
"Well, Ali and this husband of yours..." he pointed at Krishna with a shrug, "...kept me in the loop about your life," he said nonchalantly, letting her pull him inside. "So no, I don't think I missed you."
