It didn't escape Xavier how hard she tried not to roll her eyes at him, muttering under her breath again. Perhaps she was cursing him, he mused. It was oddly refreshing—watching this feisty woman challenge him. And he savored every second of it.

"Thanks," she bit out before adding, "Sir."

The word sir practically dripped with venom every time it left her lips, as though if he hadn't been her boss, she would've gleefully called him a cunt instead. Xavier found himself thoroughly entertained by this little act of playing the villain, especially since he had never actually been the bad guy in his life. Wearing this negative shade made things... interesting.

Satya was their saint, their untouchable goddess. And Xavier? He was the bastard in the shadows, the necessary evil.

"Also," he said, dragging the word out as he slid a crisp sheet of paper across the desk, "here's your suspension for a week." His eyes flicked to hers, studying the tiniest crack in her composure. "I was tempted to make it a month, but then I figured some retraining might be more useful than letting you sit at home like a sack of useless potatoes."

Bullshit. You didn't think that at all.

Truthfully, he'd never planned to suspend her for more than a week. Sure, her actions had been careless, but he knew she wasn't malicious. If she'd understood how badly she'd screwed up, she wouldn't have made the mistake in the first place.

Still, he waited, his eyes boring into hers, silently daring her to snap. There—a slight twitch in her jaw. Barely noticeable, but enough to feed his smug satisfaction.

That's it?

"I'm sorry for what I did last Friday," she said, her tone calm, measured. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have been so irresponsible."

Her unexpected reply caught him off guard. He'd been expecting fireworks—tears, yelling, maybe even a full-blown tantrum. But submission? That was... disappointing.

"You're fine with your suspension?" he asked, narrowing his eyes. "This will look bad on your CV."

"I made a mistake. I have to pay the price." She pushed back her chair, rising to her full height, which wasn't much. "Thanks, sir."

And just like that, she turned and headed for the door.

"Wait." His voice cut through the silence like a whip. "What about your argument with me?" he taunted. "Aren't you guilty of being disrespectful to me?"

She turned slowly, her expression unreadable, before she met his gaze. "Yes, I was disrespectful," she said, her voice steady, her black eyes glinting with unvarnished sincerity. He could see her emotions clear as day, an open book that betrayed her hurt. "But you should feel equally guilty for judging me as an imbecile," she retorted, her tone sharp.

"I never said that."

"You thought it."

"You were late."

"By five minutes. I forgot to punch in those darn pages in the folder," she huffed, her irritation creeping into her voice. "I asked for your forgiveness, and you ignored it."

"And that gave you the right to insult me?" he asked, keeping his voice steady. He watched as she shifted her weight from one leg to the other, clearly struggling to keep her composure.

"You insulted me first," she shot back, "and my position here at Xhasis, under you." She leveled him with a fiery gaze. "I don't appreciate anyone questioning my hard work."

Now this—this was the fire he'd been waiting for. His smile widened as he caught the glimmer of rage peeking through her carefully maintained calm facade.

"So, you took the liberty of calling me the worst boss?" he leaned forward, bracing his weight on his elbows atop the desk. He probably looked like a predator closing in on his prey, but his adorable little challenger didn't seem the least bit fazed by his attempt at intimidation.

They locked eyes, a long, tense silence stretching between them. He waited, fully expecting her to crack, to mutter some half-assed apology but none came.

Instead, she squared her shoulders and said, "Sir, I have to leave. Thanks for your time."

Then she turned on her heel and walked out.

For a moment, he stared after her, his expression frozen in shock. Then he threw his head back and laughed, a deep, hearty sound echoing through the empty room.

"She's fucking something else," he muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
