It was half past nine at night and Kallan was tired and cranky from driving all day, he had been on his way to some godforsaken place in the north of Thailand where there was a factory he wanted to take a look at before he made a bid for it.
The owner had been expecting him hours ago but the sat' nav' had directed him wrongly and even though he had doubled back he couldn't seem to get on the right track again and then he had tried to get the correct directions on his cell phone but they were wrong as well.
It seemed that because of recent road closures due to landslides, all the available information needed updating.
He was in the heart of the countryside and streetlights were few and far between so he slowed down to a crawl as he navigated the narrow and winding roads. his powerful car complaining like a thoroughbred horse chomping at the bit to be given free reign.
There was a thick mist beginning to fall now, it was monsoon season after all and he was half way up a mountain, he would have to find somewhere to bed down for the night or pull up at the side of the road and sleep in his car.
He was beginning to think that this was a sign that he shouldn't invest in the factory but he'd never been a quitter, that was one of the reasons why he'd become so successful at such a young age.
He would make it to the factory one way or another and see what there was to see before he made his final decision but for now he really needed to find somewhere to bathe, eat and sleep.
It was becoming difficult to see through the mist now and it almost felt as if he was driving on clouds instead of a road, the effect was surreal and a little bit daunting and his fuel supply was edging close to the empty mark from going so slowly.
He was just beginning to wonder if things could get any worse when he noticed a dark shape move across the front of his car before he jolted forward and felt an impact as if he had crashed into a bollard.
Pulling the handbrake up quickly he left the engine idling and climbed out to see if he had hit anything?
He'd seen so many movies where lone motorists had hit something in the middle of nowhere and when they got out to check they were savaged by a wild animal, mutilated by escaped murderers or eaten by mutant beings that had escaped from nearby laboratories.
Thinking about such movies he decided to get his crowbar out of the boot to use in defence if need be then he walked slowly to the front of his car holding the crowbar in front of him with both hands, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his hands.
He shivered as he heard wolves howling in the distance and taking a deep breath he rounded the front of the vehicle then heard a soft whine and when he followed the sound he saw a medium sized dog laid on its side and looking up at him with sad eyes.
"shiyaa, it's ok, I'll get you some help?" Kallan said to the dog as he looked closer and saw it was wearing a collar.
Grabbing his cell phone while murmuring comforting words to the dog he keyed in his location and searched for veterinarians who were close by then choosing the closest one to him, he called the number on screen.
A woman answered and Kallan quickly explained the situation then the woman said she was on her way and ended the call.
Kallan talked quietly to the dog trying to calm it, the poor thing must have been hurt pretty badly and feeling a little bit braver he bent down to pet it while telling it that someone was coming to help.
Suddenly the engine chugged to a stop, as expected he was now out of fuel but luckily the headlights would still work or at least they would until they drained the battery, could the day get any worse?
