"Hey."
I looked up from my science textbook, and saw a girl standing across the table from me. She had brown hair, and chocolate eyes. I recognized her from my math, language arts and gym class. My stomach twisted into a knot as I began thinking about what she could want from me. Was she a friend of Erika? Was she gonna be mean?
"Can I sit here?"
"Sure." I said quietly. A slow trickle of relief ran through me. She didn't sound mean.
"You new here?" She asked with a smile as she pulled out a textbook
"Yeah."
"Cool."
"Working on science?"
"Yeah."
"I have to, too. It's one of my least favorite classes, besides math."
"Same."
"Cool." She said with a smile. I let my hopes rise. Maybe we could become friends.
"I'm Charlotte."
"I'm Alex." I said with a small smile. The day wasn't going to great thanks to Erika and my demons, so it was harder than usual to slap a fake smile on my face.
"So what do you think of Arden so far?" She asked.
"It's alright."
"Yeah I agree. I've never really been a fan of school before."
"Yeah same."
"Hey, were in the same gym, language arts and math class right?" Charlotte asked as she sharpened a pencil.
"Yeah."
"Okay, I knew you looked familiar but I wasn't sure."
I offered another smile.
"You usually come up here for study hall?"
"Yeah I guess. It's quiet."
"Well it is a library." Charlotte said with a small laugh, and this time a real smile spread across my face.
"What school were you at before you came here?"
"Umm..." I had no clue how to answer this question. I didn't want her knowing my past. "I didn't really go to school."
"Oh so you were home schooled?"
"Yeah."
"Cool.
The bell rang, and the few students at other tables gathered their things and headed towards the double doors.
"Urgh I didn't get anything done. I can never keep myself in order." Charlotte said with a laugh.
We gathered up our things, and headed out the doors. I only had to get through tech ed, and then I could go home.
"What's your next class?" Charlotte asked as we made our way down a flight of stairs.
"Tech ed."
"Cool. I have social studies. We came to the bottom of the stairs and reached a split in the hallway. One half led to the related arts and technology section of the school, and the other led to the part of the school with the academic classrooms.
"Hey see you tomorrow!" Charlotte called as she walked away, waving. I waved back and smiled, and made my way into the tech ed classroom.
I sat at my usual table, and we continued building our rockets. I actually wasn't that bad at building things. The bell finally rang, and I made my way back to the locker hallway. I gathered my books and binders, shut my locker, and made a beeline for the doors, hoping to avoid Erika. Luckily, I got out the door before she had a chance to do anything to me. I felt a little lighter, making it through school without Erika saying something to me. I tried to keep my hopes down that maybe she would stop being mean, but I didn't know what she was like. I haven't been around that long. I spotted Demi's familiar car, and as I got closer, I saw that Marisa was in the passenger seat, so I hopped in the back.
