we made it back into the car and even through everything that went down in the gas station, me and ellie were still sat next to eachother. if it weren't for abby we would've already been in a screaming match against eachother.
i didn't even want to argue with ellie but i knew she did. that was usually the only reason she talked to me- not that it bothered me. now i was for sure that abby told her the same thing she said to me. "be nice."
did that mean that ellie still wanted to be in the car, even if i was there? if i knew she would be here, i wouldn't of came. maybe i was taking the whole "rivals" thing too far and it was just average sports interactions.
i looked down at ellie's fidgety hands that were placed on her thighs. i hate to admit it but when she wasn't talking, she was really hot. i watched her fingers closely, the way they flicked over the rest of her fingers and she cleaned the dirt from under her nails. i was so focused on her hands i didn't realize she was looking at me.
"whatcha starin' at?" her voice made all our past experiences become faint dreams. i wanted her to talk to me as i fell asleep, her voice being the last thing i heard before drifting-
"anyone in there?" she spoke softly, not wanting the front seaters to hear her. the music blaring on the radio hushed her voice but i could hear it behind the bass.
i looked up and had to muster up everything in my power not to start smiling at her gentle and sweet expression. what is this? why is she being so nice now?
"sorry- i was just zoned out."
"and we haven't even gotten to the drinking part yet" her voice had a slight southern twang to it that perfectly matched her face. i thought her slight accent that she tried to hide was adorable sometimes. it wasn't like an annoying country accent, it sounded like something she'd just picked up from her parents overtime.
my ears perked up. i searched my mind for every possible response. how was she so good at pretending we didn't hate eachother? she could be so gentle when she wasn't all riled up from our matches. it made me wonder what our relationship would be if we were on the same team, or we had a room together.
"not gonna say anything?" her voice interrupted my thoughts.
"zoned out again, my mind's busy" i chuckled, trying to hide how nervous i was.
"i'll leave you alone, then." ellie smiled to herself and pulled her phone out of her pocket. i watched as her fingers slid into her pocket, pulling her phone from it.
i heard the radio station switch to that narration stuff when they're switching the songs. brynnleigh turned down the music and then turned it off. that made me notice that the college was in my line of sight now so i didn't have to worry about this awkward car ride much longer.

we all went to ellie's dorm who was the only one who didn't have a roommate. her roommate graduated before her and so for this year she had a dorm all to herself. we still had an hour until the party so we just hung out at ellie's. her dorm was a lot nicer than i expected- on the first glance. there were some small recyclable items like soda cans, plastic spoons.. all scattered around counters. clothes that were neatly stacked on top of her dresser.
