Read. Print. File. Repeat. Why today of all days to have this?
I continue to pack away the endless paperwork building itself a home on my desk as I go over the schedule for today, another meeting. There is never time to breathe around here and its overbearing.
"Sir. The members of the cabinet are here for your presentation. Should we seat them in the board room?"
My assistants voice echoed through the phone as I inhale deeply, preparing myself for the long day of battling with people below me. Once again.
"Seat them at the east wing. I'll be there now."
As I straighten my suit jacket and walk down the halls of my empire I built. People around me practically jump out of the way to let me pass effortlessly. I know you can build such things based off of mutual respect but I prefer the latter, its intoxicating to see those around you bend to your will without hesitation.
The doors open to the board room as the smell of fresh coffee and cream fill my nostrils, I take the file out of my assistants hand as I make a B-line for the head of the table and seat myself-
Wait...
That smell...what was that...
As I pull my seat forward to the table. I cross my leg and look up to the others sat across the table. To my left sat proudly scanning through his documents was Mr. Allister with his two aids filling the rest of the left sided seats.
He was a schemer, smart, strategist. All round ball ache if you asked me. I couldn't do anything without him complaining he didn't put in his fair share of ideas, god forbid I chose someone over him. He'd appear in my dreams if he could.
As i beckon him to begin explaining the companies next expansions into the north of the city he stood up and paraded the room like a snobby royalist. I roll my eyes and glance back down at the sheets between my tattooed, calloused hands until a noise caught my attention. No- an interruption.
My eyes raise to the direction for the rude woman sat across from me. There she stands, the woman who makes my political and business almost impossible to strive without her say so. My jaw clenches as I look toward Allister who was sweating slightly as she stood and began speaking over him.
"No, there's too many issues with this."
Her voice like honey, smooth, sticky. Too sweet for her own good. Her long ash brown hair fell effortlessly over that disgusting cream blouse she decided was a good fit. Terrible choice.
"And what exactly would that be?"
Allister spoke challenging her as he sat himself back down. I can see the bead of sweat at the top of his hairline. He cowers to this woman and its quite entertaining.
"Would you like me to list them?"
Allister's mouth fell open in shock of her audacity, the effortless attack she made toward his hard work made my stone cold lips curl into a slight grin. She's slick. I'll give her that.
"H-How dare yo-"
I cut Allister off as I raise my hand toward him, he quietens down as I turn my gaze back toward her and her ever so proud colleagues. I lean forward, pushing my files to the side and rest my head on my hands, my shit eating grin still plastered across my lips as she stood opposite me with her nose turned up.
"Please. Enlighten me Miss. Blackwood."
As she shared a disgusted glare at me she handed the sheets toward her colleagues all while she began listing inconveniences for her and her companies. Not issues, Inconvenience's. Allister gritted his jaw in annoyance as he started crossing off his ideas and further expansion plans amongst her complaints.
