CHAPTER FOUR: I'LL ALWAYS LOOK OUT FOR YOU

Kaitlyn stood in her apartment doing some of her laundry when a knock sounded at her door. The girl set the shirt in her hands down and walked to her door, opening it up as shock filled her face, surprised by the one in front of her.

Klaus turned around to face her, "Hello, love."

"What are you doing here?" Kaitlyn did her best to keep her tone of voice calm and collected but she was sure that he could hear the nervousness behind it. She turned around to continue doing her laundry, knowing the man wouldn't leave without them talking.

Klaus slowly stepped forward, surprised the apartment was in her name and anyone could enter. "I heard you were a vampire now."

Kaitlyn shot him a look before looking away so she didn't make eye contact for too long. "Mhm, so, what? You came to see if the compulsion went away?"

"I came to see you." He corrected her words--which were true.

Kaitlyn stopped what she was doing and faced the man she loved, "Don't you think you're a year too late for that, Nik? Or Klaus or whatever you go by these days."

Klaus closed his eyes briefly, he hated hearing her call him Klaus, she had always called him Nik and he wanted it to stay that way. Klaus was always driven from fear and power and he wanted her to think better of him. "Nik, please call me Nik."

"I thought we were happy." Kaitlyn's voice had gotten quiet as she spoke, she hadn't spoken about him in over a year and now, he was here. "I thought we were starting our life together. I thought that you loved me."

"I did." Klaus interjected quickly before correcting himself, "I do."

"How can you stand here and tell me that after you compelled away all of my memories of us, of you? Did you even think about what the outcome was gonna be?" Kaitlyn asked him, confused what his thought process was.

"Of course i did. I gave it a lot of thought actually." Klaus told her, his eyes holding sorrow and love, it almost was too overwhelming for her.

"You made all of it go away, Nik." Kaitlyn inhaled sharply as tears began to form in the corner of her eyes. "The night we met, all of the mornings we woke up next to each other, every smile, every movie night, every night falling asleep in your arms just gone. You made a hole in my heart where you were supposed to be. Why?"

"You didn't know who or what i was. When we met that night, i recognized you instantly as the doppelganger and i knew that I needed you for the ritual. Then in the morning, something changed and you told me about Elena and i knew that i wouldn't be able to use you in the ritual. I got distracted along the way. I knew that you would never forgive me if i killed your sister." He explained as Kaitlyn just stood there and tried to think about his words. "I knew it would break your heart. I thought if i erased your memories of me, you wouldn't be in this agonizing heart break of betrayal."

"You think that erasing you and our life together out of my head wasn't betrayal?" Kaitlyn asked him but he failed to meet her eyes. "I loved you. You were the first person that i ever loved. The only person. Everyday after you compelled me, i could feel something missing, i could feel the emptiness. It wasn't just betrayal and whether I'm a human or a vampire, you can still compel me."
