CHAPTER SIX: EXECUTION

A girl had tapped Kaitlyn on the shoulder and told her that someone asked for her upstairs. Her curiosity got the best of her and so she walked upstairs to one of the bedrooms. No one was inside that she saw but she did hear someone behind her. Her head turned and Caroline was stood behind her.

"I'm sorry, Kaitlyn. I didn't actually think that this was gonna work but he assured me it would. I had my doubts on whether or not i'd be able to go through with this but here we are." Caroline told the girl—who just grew confused.

"What are you talking about?" Kaitlyn asked with confusion laced on her face.

"Just watch your back." Caroline told her and walked out of the room. Kaitlyn faced the other way as she looked around the room but nothing and no one was there. A click sound echoed through her ears and pain sored through her back as a stake was lodged in it. A gasp left her lips and she gripped the table that was next to her.

Her head lifted and saw Damon in front of her. "Damon?"

"I'm sorry." Was all he said before her world went black.

NEW YORK, DECEMBER 17, 2009

Kaitlyn walked up to her apartment with a soft sigh, the exhaustion was slowly approaching as she got closer to her door. Just as she reached out to open it, the door opened and Nik was stood there with a grin on his face. Despite how tired she was, somehow she felt this little burst of energy and butterflies when she looked at him. A smile rested on her face as she looked to him with love in her eyes. "Hi."

"Hello, Love." He greeted her, stepping forward and leaning forward to press a kiss to her cheek. Kaitlyn closed her eyes briefly as she soaked the moment in before he leaned back. "I have a surprise for you."

Kaitlyn raised her eyebrows. "Surprise? I hate surprises." She lied easily as she fought back a grin. Her voice had the purest form of love and softness.

Nik chuckled as he walked behind her and put his hands over her eyes. His lips pressed against her ear as he whispered to her, she knew a smirk was on his face. "Actually, you love surprises. You just like to tell people that you don't."

Kaitlyn's lips curved into a smile that made her just want to explode with happiness. Nik knew her so well already. The two met 4 months ago in a random dive bar and they had spent almost every day together. Nik had always listened to Kaitlyn talk and rant about everything and nothing at the same time. It could be 3am and the two would be sitting on the couch with wine and be talking about the most random things. They shared laughs and tears and it felt like they were the only two people in the world. "What is it?"

Nik walked forward gently with his hands still covering her eyes, careful not to trip either one of them. The living room had a dim light, there were rose petals on the floor and candles lit up. Kaitlyn could smell the Christmas scent from the candles making her grow excited. Despite her parents accident and being away from her siblings, Kaitlyn loved the holidays. She loved the cheer and the beauty of it all.

Rebekah had been over earlier to help him set everything up. There were a two wine glasses with a bottle next to them and some of Kaitlyn's favourite foods. In the middle of everything on the table sat a small velvet box. "Are you ready?" He asked her which just received an eager nod from her. His hands uncovering her eyes as he let her adjust to the sight.
