CHAPTER ELEVEN: TESTING ONE'S PATIENCE

Kaitlyn decided to try and put some of her faith into Elijah. After all, Klaus was his brother and he had to have cared about him enough to help him get his memories back. She was gonna let Elijah handle that, she was gonna focus on her friends and family for the time being. Every time she thought about Klaus and the situation at hand, she just broke down and cried and she was sick of crying.

Kaitlyn was sat in a booth at the grill with a perfect view of the streets of Mystic Falls. Elena and her had an oddly good night—which she was thankful for because she missed her sister so much. Jeremy walked up to her, in his work shirt, with a smile. "Hey, Kaitlyn. I just got off the phone with Elena. You have a good night?"

Kaitlyn nodded with a smile as she leaned forward, her arms resting on the table, a thoughtful look in her eyes. "We did. It was nice to talk and just-be sisters again."

"Good, i'm glad." Jeremy smiled at that. He was happy to hear his sisters were getting along again after so long, "what can i get you?"

"Umm..." Kaitlyn trailed off as she thought about what she was in the mood for, "i will take a coke and fries. Extra fries, please, my lovely little brother."

Kaitlyn had a grin on her face as Jeremy rolled his eyes but nodded nonetheless. "Coming right up."

Even though Kaitlyn loved New York and wished she was there, she was happy to be back in Mystic falls with her family and her friends. She did miss them a lot and right now they were exactly what she needed. As Kaitlyn's head was turned in the direction of the window, she could see someone sit in front of her in the corner of her eye making her turn her head to face the person, her smile slowly going away as quick as it came. "What are you doing here?"

"I just came to get a drink." He smirked at the woman and leaned back in the booth as Kaitlyn sighed.

"I meant in my booth. There are plenty of empty chairs around, go sit at them." Kaitlyn sassed as Jeremy came to bring her food and drink to her.

"Jeremy, mate, grab me a bourbon?" Klaus looked up to the youngest gilbert but didn't wait for confirmation before looking back to Kaitlyn. "I'd much rather sit here."

"Well, i wasn't asking you, was i?" She grinned at the hybrid and popped a fry in her mouth. Klaus just held his smirk, amused by her fire and sarcasm.

Klaus was struggling internally and mentally. He didn't remember her but it wasn't until he spoke to Elijah that he actually thought about it and felt some type of emptiness inside him. He couldn't lie though, sometimes when he looked at her...he felt this odd feeling in his stomach, like he knew that she was something important. "I was wondering if you've seen my brother? Haven't heard from him in a couple days."

"Nope." Kaitlyn shrugged as her eyes refused to look into his. "Haven't heard from him since he went out of town. Plus, Elijah and i aren't on 'bestie' terms. Not that you remember that."

"Yes, well, how relevant could you have been to me if i was able to have my memories of you just gone one day?" Klaus asked her as he leaned forward. He was clearly trying to upset her and she refused to let him know that it was working.

Kaitlyn forced herself not to react but that comment made it feel like she had been stabbed in her gut. "That's a good question but if you really don't care about me or your memories then what are you doing here?" Kaitlyn's eyes grew cold as she looked into the love of her life's eyes. "Come on, Klaus. If you really wanted to kill me, you would have already. What? Are you scared? I have the power and strength of an original vampire. All thanks to you, by the way."

Klaus refused to admit that for some reason, it stung when she called him Klaus, it felt so wrong and he couldn't understand why. "Yes, that does beg the question, how did you exactly become an original?"

"Like i said, that's all thanks to you. And Bonnie. She was kind enough to preform the spell but it was all your idea. Granted, back then i was actually on your side. Now? Not so much." Kaitlyn loved him and she would always love him. She would always be in love with him but she needed to face reality. Reality being, until he got his memories back, Klaus was her enemy right now. He wanted her dead because of his mother's manipulation.

Klaus looked at her and then laughed out loud, "You think that i should be scared of you? A newbie vampire? Against a thousand year old original hybrid?"

"I am pretty new, yeah and maybe i'll lose against you but despite being new, i have control over myself in multiple ways. Your mothers spell gave me strength and speed to match yours. At the end of the day, it comes down to experience and intelligence. The downfall about you, Klaus, is that you are blinded by anger and you don't think. That is how i'll beat you if you come after me." Kaitlyn also leaned forward as she stared into his eyes. "I love Nik. The Nik that played video games with my brother, the one that asked me to move in with him, the one that greeted me with flowers every single day when i got home but you are not him. You are a puppet for your mother, doing her bidding because she's too much of a coward to kill me herself."

Klaus was getting angrier by the second as she spoke. He was not liking anything she was saying and he was ready to kill her right then and there. He stood up in a fury—ready to attack her despite the humans filling the restaurant.

His movements stopped when a white oak stake was pointed at his heart, his eyes tracing every detail of the stake, confusion and anger in his eyes as he looked back to her. "How do you have this?"

"Nik gave it to me." Kaitlyn looked up at him as she held the stake up towards his chest. She pressed it against his shirt, making him back up as she moved to stand up in front of him. "Now that this weapon can kill me, he thought it was best for me to have it, so he made a smaller stake and gifted it to me. I don't want to kill you because i have hope that i'll get the man i love back but make no mistake, i will if i have to. I wouldn't be able to drive a stake through his heart and that is my downfall but i guess it's a good thing that you are not him."

Klaus gritted his teeth before he left the grill in anger. Kaitlyn let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and closed her eyes with a soft sigh. She knew that she really wouldn't be able to kill him. Memories or not but she needed him to believe that she would and she hoped that he did.
