taking a short(fatass) hiatus from mysterium so we can get so enid and ajax loveeeee

"Ajax! Come here!" Enid belted out from across the hall, pushing through a group of people as she flailed herself toward him. He stared wide-eyed at the girl, but nevertheless smiling as she grinned up at him.

"You're gonna meet me out in the courtyard after dinner, okay? Now I gotta go, I promised I would help Wednesday with something. Catch you later!" She said quickly, and before he could even say a word, she had already zoomed off in the opposite direction, dropping at least two books before she managed to get out of his sight.

She is such a perfect mess, he thought with a small smirk spreading across his lips. It wasn't the first time he had thought of her in a possibly intimate light, but he knew that she was far too out of his league to want someone like him.

A lone stoner in a school full of other way cooler dudes? Yeah, there was no way she would ever even consider batting an eye in her direction without there being a better option right behind him. He had settled on the heartbreak a while ago, yet it was like he intentionally kept picking at the wound, making it bleed so often that the taste of blood never really left his mouth.

He would've given a lot to at least go on a date with her, but of course that would require her to be quiet for a millisecond so he could get a word in. Normally he didn't mind listening to her rambling about anything and everything, but sometimes he just wanted to blurt something out or maybe kiss her into silence so he could hear his own thoughts for once.

Maybe tonight he would get the chance to say something other than under his breath.

And maybe tonight he would actually be heard.

Ajax quietly stumbled out of his room after a well-deserved nap, rubbing his eyes as he continued down the darkened hallway. The golden, tarnished lighting made everything seem a warm yellow, golden as if everything was so much more majestic than before.

He reached the bottom of the stairs and immediately spotted her, sitting on the edge of the fountain with her eyes intensely focused on her phone. The stoner walked closer to her, eyeing her before clearing his throat.

Enid squealed and jumped up, and he quickly grabbed hold of her and yanked her forward before she fell back into the fountain. It was as if it happened in slow motion, and he slowly pulled her into his body, and she wrapped herself around him, but instead of stopping, he kept falling back, and they both landed on the ground with a thud.

Unfortunately, her phone wasn't as lucky, and plunked into the water.

Silence ensued as they lay on the ground, the boy trying to regain control of his thoughts before it was quickly broken by laughter coming from the blonde-haired girl, and she rolled over to look up at the stoner who had saved her from a watery mess.

"That wasn't how I planned for this to go!" She said with a Cheshire cat of a grin, before quickly standing up and running to the fountain, quickly dipping her arm into the cool water and retrieving her phone. He watched from where he still lay on the ground, and she walked back to him, holding her hand out to him.

"Come on, you gotta help me save my phone with some rice," she said, and he stared at her for a moment longer before quickly grabbing ahold of her arm and helping himself from the ground.

Man, if she couldn't tell how he felt by now, he didn't know how else he would have to tell her.

~~

The pink sequin-bedazzled phone sat in a bowl of rice, and the pair both sat on the floor next to a small heater she had in her room. A pink blanket was wrapped snuggly around her body, and she stared off into the distance. Ajax glanced over at her, smiling for a moment before his eyes furrowed.

"Why did you wanna meet me?"

"Because I had something for you."

"...oh?"

Enid turned to him, her face holding a soft expression he hadn't seen before. It was gentle, angelic if that was within reason. He knew some might say he was just being a sucker for her, but he could have sworn he had seen ancient paintings of angels beholding the same expression as she did then.

"Well, I made it for you, and I was going to share it until..."

Her eyes trailed up to her phone and then quickly back to the ground, a frown falling on her face.

"What was it?"

"I-I made you a playlist of songs I thought you might like, and I added some in that I remember you mentioning you liked," she murmured softly, quietly, and she avoided his eyes for a moment before slowly looking over at him.

His eyes held a tender expression, and she thought it looked like he was going to cry. Before she could process what was happening, he had enveloped her in a hug, squeezing her tightly as she slowly returned it, smiling as she buried her head into his chest.

"What was it titled?"

"Merlot Midnights. I don't know, the color just reminds me of you and when I think of you I think midnight best suits you so..."

Ajax smiled at her, before planting a soft kiss on her forehead.

"I know a lot of people would describe you as the pale morning sun, but you remind me of the rays that beam through stained glass, the ones that paint masterpieces across your eyes, and you remind me of the sunset, the final light of day that so many people admire. That's what I think when I think of you.." He blushed slightly before turning away, and she sniffled as she pulled him in for another hug.

"I don't think anyone has ever said something so sweet, thank you!"

"Well, sometimes just listening is sweet, you know," Ajax teased, and she gave him a frown before leaning into him.

"I didn't think dropping my phone in the fountain would have such good results."

"It's crazy how things play out, isn't it?"
