Chapter 13 - Escape
*Dani*
The man in the armor charged the fourth turtle and the girl ran to my side. I tried to crawl away but the girl grabbed my arm and tried to calm me down.
"Dani! Calm down! It's me, April!" Her blue gaze was on me, but then it moved to the turtles in the cages. Instead of worry, the look in her eyes turned to horror. She ran from my side and started banging on the cage with the turtle who had a purple bandana.
"Donnie!" She screamed. "What do I do?" She pressed her ear against the glass and whispered something quietly to herself. She ran to a small computer and began repeatedly tapping a button.
I quickly scrambled to my feet and looked around. A door to my right was opened slightly and I ran towards it. The girl yelled again behind me, but I continued on. I squeezed through the small opening and was suddenly shrouded in darkness. Where was I supposed to go? I shook my head and just kept running, hoping I could find an exit.
"Dani!" I heard someone call in the distance. I pumped my legs more quickly, wanting to get away from the voice.
Suddenly there was a ringing in my head and I skidded to a stop putting my hands over my ears. "Leave me alone!" I screamed out. I slumped down to the ground, my eyes squeezed shut. Suddenly I felt two large hands on my shoulders slowly turning me away from the wall.
"Dani." A voice said through the ringing. "I need you to uncover your ears. Raph, give me one of your Sai's." The voice was covered again by the horrid ringing. Suddenly there was a sharp pain behind my ear and I screamed out. My arms flailed trying to make whoever or whatever was causing the pain to stop. Someone or something else came along and helped to hold down my arms. The pain continued behind my ear and I whimpered and repeatedly begged them to stop the pain. Then, in an instant, the pain did stop and I slumped against the wall once more.
"What is that?" A naive voice asked. A name rose up in my mind. Michelangelo.
"It appears to be some sort of mind control device." Another voice said, this time closer to me. Donatello. Where were these names coming from?
"Is she going to be alright?" A third voice asked more insistently, but also carefully. Leonardo.
I slowly opened my eyes and stared at the ground for a few moments. Then I raised my gaze to meet two green eyes staring at me with worry, anger, and confusion. I then realized that the green eyed turtle was still holding my arms to my side. I looked down at my arms and wiggled slightly and he pulled his hands away, almost hesitantly. I looked back up to his gaze and tilted my head slightly. Raphael. I then looked over his shoulder to see a girl staring patiently at me, but she seemed to be expectant of something. As if she waited for some sort of reaction from me. April. Suddenly memories came flooding back into my mind like a slap in the face. Various pictures flashed in my vision and I gasped for breath. I blinked away the pictures and again stared at the concrete floor.
"We need to move. Now." Leonardo spoke up.
"But what about Dani?" Mikey asked, a slight whimper to his tone.
"I'm fine." I whispered softly. "Like Leo said, we need to go." I stood up, but leaned against the wall for support.
"You shouldn't walk." Donnie said to me. "Your body may be in shock from what you've been through."
I gave him a hard look and he knowingly backed down. I sighed heavily and pushed myself away from the wall, only to stumble. Raph was at my side in an instant, supporting me. I jerked away from him and he froze in surprise. April walked forward and gently placed her hand on my shoulder.
"You need someone to help you, Dani." She said softly. Her eyes were filled with concern, and a slight twinge of fear.
I scowled, but nodded in response. She gave Raph a nod and I felt my feet lift off the ground. I avoided his gaze and instead stared at my hands. Then my stomach churned and my gaze whipped up towards Raph. He was staring straight ahead, following behind his brothers and April as they searched for a way out. Raph was alive.
"Sacks said you were dead..." I whispered feeling a lump forming in my throat. Don't cry... I told myself. Raph was alive, Sacks lied. Of course Sacks lied, he was a manipulative sociopath.
"So Sacks thinks I'm dead? Good." Raph said simply, his tone cold.
I went silent again, staring back down at my hands. This was a little awkward. What was I supposed to say? 'Yeah it is a good thing he thinks your dead!' Unless I wanted to be given one of his famous glares, I best just stick to being quiet because at this point I couldn't think of saying anything else.
"This way!" Leo whispered to us. We all followed silently behind him, careful to watch for any soldiers that may be around to stop us. I looked past Raph's arm to behind only to see something moved in the shadows of the halls and I squinted to try and see better. Again something moved.
"Raphael..." I whispered. I noticed his gaze move to me and he saw my gaze to be directed behind him.
"Something's following us." I whispered again.
Raph glanced backwards and paused for a moment. He squinted his eyes trying to look through the shadows. He shook his head and looked back down to me. "Nothing's there, Dani. We're fine."
I sighed heavily in response. I saw something, and I don't care if Raph is a ninja and whatnot something was there that was very good at hiding.
In front of us a door opened and Mikey let out a quiet whoop of excitement. The brothers, followed by April then Raph and I filed out through the door into the nighttime air. My eyes widened in surprise. How long had I been in there? It was close to nighttime when I was taken, so was I only there for a few hours?
"We need to move quickly and quietly." Leo whispered to his brothers. "Raph, you obviously hold on to Dani. Donnie, take April."
I noticed Donnie smile in excitement but quickly hide it as April gave Leo a hard look.
"I can keep up." She said as she crossed her arms.
I smirked slightly. "You and I both know it's hard to keep up with these guys."
April looked to me and she smiled slightly. With a sigh similar to my own she walked over to Donnie and let him pick her up. Suddenly the brothers were all climbing up towards the roof. I found myself wrapping my arms around Raph's neck to feel more secure as he climbed up the side. I noticed April do the same and related to Donnie as he blushed slightly. I didn't blush so much as feel butterflies in my stomach. Once the brothers had made it to the roof I instantly pulled my arms back against my body and looked away from Raph. His chest rose and he sighed heavily.
"Can I be put down now? I'm pretty sure I'm fine to walk on my own." I said quietly.
Raph's gaze moved down towards me but I still kept mine away. "Donnie, can she walk now?" He asked.
"I suppose." Donnie said in response as he put April down. His gaze went to me. "Just stick close to Raph, that way if needed he can carry you again."
I frowned slightly, but nodded in response. Raph let me down and I felt relieved to feel solid concrete beneath my feet again.
"Are we done having our little conversations? We need to get back to the lair so Donnie can figure out what that thing on Dani's ear was." Leo said as he stepped in the middle of everyone. His gaze was hard as he looked to everyone individually, taking a longer moment when he got to me. Finally he turned and motioned for us to follow.
I lagged behind slightly, not wanting to be alongside Raph. Mikey must have noticed because he was at my side in an instant, a big smile on his face.
"Hey Dani." He said quietly. He looked towards Raph who had been glancing backwards but was now moving towards the other brothers. I looked back to Mikey who winked at me and gave me another big smile.
"Thank you Mikey." I said quietly.
"It's no problem! I know you two are kind of in an awkward faze so why not help you out." He giggled and shrugged. I smiled softly in response then went quiet as we hurried back to the lair.
