Alice
I didn't know what was going on, but I had been in this darkness for a very long time. I felt like I was in a dark room, my mind was black, I couldn't control myself, and I was scared. Sure everyone would be, but i was even more scared because I knew what I was capable of when I was going into one of my mental break-downs that spiralled into violence and unnecessary malice.
I felt like the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. I knew I was crazy, but I couldn't do anything about it. But I had decided that I didn't want to be in this darkness anymore, I was tired of feeling like I wasn't in control of anything anymore. I didn't even know what was wrong with me, but I could tell I'd hd whatever it was for my entire life, but it was just now making it's appearance.
"Her brain wave activity i different. There's more going on, like she's thinking again. Do you think she could be responding ? Maybe she's coming back to us. Should we let her Mum know?" I heard the voice to my right, but it wasn't one I knew, a high-pitched woman's voice. I wanted to scream out, to reach to her; tell her I was here. But no one could hear me, at least if I made any noise I couldn't hear it myself. If she heard it, there was no response, but in my head I was screaming for her to help me. i didn't want to be alone in this darkness anymore. I wanted to be back, I wanted to be Alice Jenkins, the friendly girl who was ignored and forgotten about by most. I wanted that ordinary , boring life back.
"I don't think it's anything Maura. If it is, maybe it will show up again on our feed. For now, let's just check her vitals, and make sure she's alive first." I deep man's voice was to my right. I felt myself get angry. How dare he tell her to ignore it. I was trying so hard to get her attention, and he killed my chances. Yes, I am alive but I can't tell you I'm here if you don't let her help me. Maura. That name was familiar and it caught my attention as I heard a dejected sigh, and replayed the man's words.
"I'm sorry, Maura. I know how bad you want to help this girl. I would to if she reminded me so much of my children. How is your son by the way ? What's his name, Neil?" I heard a chuckle from the woman.
"He's good. That band of his is top-notch. They've gone international, they're touring in America now, can you believe it? The states, incredible. That was always Niall's dream, to preform for huge crowds. Singing since he was a babe." I heard shuffles as I felt her move around my bed, muttering about brain activity. "That's my Niall," an audible gasp came from the woman's mouth.
"What is it?" The doctor's feet made low clunking noises as he moved over to her, bumping the edge of whatever I was on.
"Look, look. At the activity. It jumped when I spoke, it jumped alot."
"Maybe it was a fluke, say it again." I heard a frustrated grump.
"That's my Niall." Niall. Niall. NIALL. I knew that name! I couldn't put face to it, but I knew that name. "Look, again! Why? Because I said Niall?" She clapped loud as a machine next to my head beeped out loudly.
"This is, incredible. Maybe she is thinking, if she is, what if she knows a Niall? She's a transfer from Doncaster, what if she knew Niall when he lived there with his father?" Maura gasped and began jumping around it sounded like.
"Alice, honey, can you hear me? Do you know Niall? Niall Horan? C'mon, ye have to know somethin'!" When she got excited, her Irish accent deepened, I liked that. Niall Horan. Irish accent. Those fit together . I knew those. The machine beeped loudly again.
"Doctor, could I call him ? See if he knows her? You can handle this can't ye?" She was loud, and hppy sounding. Loud and Happy. Niall Horan. Irish. A blonde head of hair popped into my mind, a handsome face with it, smiling, crinkled eyes. Yes, I knew him. Now I have to open my eyes, escape the dark.
"Niall? Honey is that you? Yes, hello Love, I'm fine. Hi Harry," My brain machine went crazy, my mind latching onto Harry, a head of curls, dimples, green eyes. Niall. Niall and Harry. "Zayn and Liam you say? That's quite the pair to be doin' that," My monitor was beeping again, as two more boys joined the picture. Liam. Payne. Zayn, tattoos, quiff. Cigarettes. Spoons. Bits and pieces added to my picture, memories playing through my mind of four boys I didn't know moments ago. "Yes, right, well I've called you to ask a very serious question. Put it on speaker? Okay." rustling on the phone at my shoulder made me think she was sitting right next to me. "All the boys are there? Good, that may be helpful.
"I have a patient here, she's got a defeincy in her brain. It's a disease that attacks them, makes 'em crazy, hyper-active, violent, the sort. She's a young lady, right 'round your age. She used to go to Doncaster, maybe around the time you lived with your father. Her name is Alice Jenkins. Do ya know her?"
"Alice Jenkins?" A deep irish voice flowed through the speaker near me, and my monitor jumped again. I knew that voice.
"That name sounds familiar. Whats she look like, maura?" That voice was deep and slow. Harry.
"Blonde, 'bout 5'6, real pretty."
"Yeah, I think I know her," Zayn.
"From Doncaster you say?" Liam.
"Yeah, a transfer patient. Had a big break-down." Maura sounded excited.
"Boys, what're you lads thinkin so hard on ? You'll hurt ya self. What's this about a big break down now?" I knew that voice.
"Aye Boobear!" Harry yelled, "Do you know a girl named Alice Jenkins? Had a big break down of the mental-ness I s'pose. Maura's asking about her." I heard a cough nd a splutter. "Hey, you spit water all over me!"
"Alice?! Alice Jenkins? What? Why? Maura, what's going on?" What name goes with that voice? What face?
"Do you know her?" I heard yells, and arguing across the phone, Maura joining in, but I didn't her any of it, because I had dazed out. That voice, the face. That name.
"Louis!" I felt my eyes finally fly open, machines next to me sounding like alarms. I heard panic on the phone, Louis' voice reapeatdly asking what was going on. Then doctors swarmed the room I was in. but I lay completely still, I didn't fight back. Instead I reached out, and clasped onto Maura's hand for support.
As I looked at the woman who helped me return, kind, aged blue eyes met mine, her blonde hair pulled behind her.
"Niall looks so much like you," I whispered.
"I know love," She whispered back, squeezing my hand. Then I felt fluids rush into my veins. "They're going to let you go to sleep now, Sweetheart." Maura went to release my hand.
"Stay," I croaked. I felt tears sting my impossibly dry eyes, relief flooded them as my tears fell. I stretched my body, joints cracking and snapping. Relief washed over my entire body, and my eyes grew droopy.
"I will, Alice." I liked Maura. She was all I had right now, and I didn't want to lose that.
I gripped her tighter as I fell to medical induced sleep.
