"Satya, talk to me," Xavier started

"Satya, talk to me," Xavier started.

Dhanya and Krithika had stayed back to play chess after lunch. Dhanya being Dhanya had, of course, convinced Krithika to stay for a game. The girl had a gift—those big puppy eyes, the sugary tone—no one but her sister could resist. She wielded it like a spell, bending people to her whims.

But Xavier wasn't thinking about them now. He followed Satya into the garden, the earthy scent of soil and jasmine wrapping around him like an old, comforting shawl. Gardening was her haven, the one place where she didn't have to be "Satya Devi, Commander of All Things." Here, she was just a woman who loved her plants and occasionally hummed her favorite ragas. He used to tease her that if they'd never met, she'd be running a horticulture empire by now.

The garden was overflowing with jasmine, her favorite flower. They were thick, their star-shaped blossoms heavy in the air, clinging to her like the perfume she'd never need. She walked slowly, whispering to each plant, her fingers brushing leaves like they were delicate lovers. It was bizarre—and strangely adorable. Satya, the terrifying force of nature, was cooing to her greenery like a doting mother.

"Are you going to ignore me?" he called again, frustration edging his voice as she kept her slow, deliberate pace.

"Satya, you want me to beg?" he quipped, exasperated. "Fine. Here."

With a dramatic sigh, he dropped to his knees, placing a hand over his heart. "Forgive me, Your Majesty."

She stopped, finally turning to face him, her expression calm but commanding. "Confess."

He blinked, confusion creasing his brow. "What?"

"Tell me what's really bothering you." She stepped closer, her voice softer now. "I want to know."

"It's just about the Xhasi—"

She silenced him with a single finger pressed against his lips. "No lies."

He sighed. She always knew. No use pretending. Satya could peel back his layers like the petals of her beloved jasmine, and he hated how easily she made him unravel.

"I think... I'm attracted to someone," he admitted quickly, avoiding her gaze. "Please don't ask me who."

"And?" Her voice remained gentle.

He swallowed hard, the words catching in his throat. "I'm confused about it."

Her smile softened into something knowing, almost teasing. "I already know who it is. I just wanted to hear it from your sweet mouth."

His eyes widened in shock. How? How could she possibly know?

She straightened, her smile widening like a cat that had cornered its prey. "Why do you think I invited her here?"

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

He choked on air, coughing violently, his throat burning like he'd inhaled pure fire. "Wha—what the hell are you talking about?" he wheezed.

"I notice everything about you, Xav." Her hand brushed lightly over his arm, slow and deliberate. "At first, I wasn't sure. But when you looked at her earlier, like she was carved by the gods themselves? That's when I knew."

"Satya..." His face flushed a deep pink, the embarrassment surging through him like a teenager caught watching something inappropriate. His best friend had been watching him, spying on him.

"I saw it in your eyes," she said softly. "Desire. But is it more than that?"

He swallowed hard, feeling the ground beneath him tilt. "I..."

"Don't hurt her," she cut him off gently. "Or yourself." Her voice broke on the last word, trembling like a leaf caught in the wind. "If it's just infatuation, end it now."

He lowered his head, shame prickling at him.

But he knew this wasn't just about him. This was about Satya, too—about her and Narayan, about whatever heartbreak lingered in her past. Still, he nodded.

"If your heart's not ready," she whispered, her voice like the softest plea, "don't light the flame. It'll burn everything down."

And then she broke. The tears came fast, silent, and relentless, carving rivers down her face. He caught her hand, holding it tightly as if it could hold all her pain.

Was it only attraction? Maybe it was—animal instinct, raw and simple. But why couldn't he let it go? He'd been infatuated before. He'd forgotten Alisha easily, and let the feelings dissolve like smoke. So why was Krithika different? Why did she feel like a drug he couldn't quit?

"Xav?" Satya's voice trembled as she pressed her head to his chest. "I know you don't want to hurt anyone. But she's innocent. Don't do this to her...or to yourself."

He had no answers, only a heavy, suffocating helplessness. Yet one thing remained: a burning, undeniable emotion for Krithika.

They sat there together as Satya's tears finally subsided.

Her words hung in the air like a prophecy, painful and undeniable. He couldn't play with fire anymore.

But damn it, he wasn't sure he could stop.
