"Are you sure that you are able to get this done, Sam?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper while I was on the ground with her standing on my back.

"Yes," she said and nodded while she struggled to toss my blankets into the washer with a small grunt. "I know what I am doing, Tommy."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes but didn't say another word while she finished stuffing the blankets into the washer.

"Ok, we are going to need some detergent," she said and hopped off my back, and I stood and looked at her, "and then we will need to start the washer." She looked at me and grinned, her eyes bright. "After that, we will be done until we need to put the stuff in the dryer."

"And what about changing the settings of the washer?" someone asked from behind us, amused. "Don't you have to change them before you start the washer?"

We flinched and turned around to see my mom standing behind us.

Our eyes grew wide while we stared at her, and my mouth went dry while my heart skipped a beat before it started to pound faster in my chest.

Busted...

"I already changed them to what we need for the blankets, Luna," she said while she looked at her innocently, and I held back an eye roll, scowling. She looked at me before she looked at my mother, fixing her glasses, continuing her innocent act.

Mama looked between us before she looked at me. "What happened?" she asked and raised an eyebrow. "What did you do?"

I didn't respond and looked down, feeling guilty but not knowing why.

"He didn't do anything, Luna," she said, shaking her head, and I nudged her to keep her quiet because I didn't want her to know. She looked at me from the corner of her eyes and rolled her eyes, but she did what I asked and stayed silent, not giving out more information than what was already said.

"Well?" Mama asked and looked at me. She raised an eyebrow in question and cocked his head, studying me. "Then what happened?"

I hesitated before I cleared my throat and looked down, shrugging. "Someone decided to dump their food on my head," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "And we are working on getting my bedding washed because I was still covered in it when I went into my bed."

Mama pressed her lips into a thin line and narrowed her eyes. She looked between the two of us before she focused her gaze on me. "Who?" she asked with a small warning tone in her voice, and Sam flinched and ducked behind me a bit. "Who did it?"

I stayed silent and pulled Sam closer to me and moved her a little behind me, protecting her from Mama.

Blame Sam... the stupid voice whispered. Blame her for doing it.

I pressed my lips into a thin line and didn't say a word. I couldn't blame Sam because I knew that it wasn't her fault.

She didn't do this to me; she wouldn't do that to me, never in a million years.

Blame her, the voice whispered.

I can't...

"Thomas," she warned again. She frowned and pressed her lips into a thin line. "Who did it?"

"Sam," I blurted out finally, and my best friend snorted and rolled her eyes but didn't move away from me. "Sam did it. She was the one that dumped her food on me. It's her fault." I pointed at her while I looked at my mom.

Mama scowled and narrowed her eyes while she folded her arms across her chest. She knew that I was lying, and I couldn't help but look down because I couldn't meet her gaze any longer. "Do you want to change that?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question, and I could hear that if I didn't, then I would be in trouble.
