"Sam?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper when we were further away from everyone except for Miss Wright but not close to our classroom yet. I watched as she set her jaw and narrowed her eyes, but she did not look my way or make any move that she heard me. "Sam, please," I begged. "Say something, anything. Talk to me. I-I need you to say something, please."
She's not going to say a damn thing, the stupid voice said with a sneer, and if it had eyes then I knew that it would be narrowed. Why do you even want her to say anything? She sounds weird and doesn't need to be saying anything to anyone.
But she doesn't sound weird, I said with my voice barely above a whisper, and I know that she doesn't sound weird. She sounds normal and is the only thing that is helping me right now.
The voice scoffed a laugh and mentally rolled its eyes. You wouldn't need her help if you just listened to me, the voice snarked. Take your hand out of hers and move away from her. No one cares about her anyway, so why should you?
Because I want her and do care about her, I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I grabbed her hand tighter, but she didn't pull her hand away from mine and didn't make any move that I was hurting her. I want her as my best friend, and she wants me as hers.
"Tommy?" Sam asked, her voice barely above a whisper, but I didn't look at her from the corner of my eye and only squeezed her hand tighter. She looked at me with wide eyes filled with tears and a small frown on her face. "Tommy?" she asked again, and I looked at her with eyes filled with pain and fear.
Her frown grew larger, and she cocked her head and studied me, and her eyes flashed with concern while a small frown appeared on her face. "Tommy, what is it? Are you ok?"
I shook my head and bit the inside of my lip because I was not ok, and I had no idea when I would be ok or if that feeling would never change.
You'll be ok when you take your hand out of hers and treat her like shit, the voice said with a sneer. Go ahead and listen to me. I know you want to.
No...
Then be in pain and be the laughing stock of the whole pack. Just know that it will not just be the whole pack, but it will be the whole Werewolf community. Everyone will know how much of a piece of shit you are because you are siding with her and not those that actually care about you.
But Sam does...
Sam cares about me a lot...
Sam pulled me closer to her and grabbed my hand tighter. She didn't say a word and leaned her head on my arm because she wasn't tall enough to rest her head on my shoulder, but that wasn't enough to make me feel comfortable or better.
"Are you two ok back there?" Miss Wright asked and furrowed her brows before she looked at us with a small frown on her face. Concern flashed through her eyes, and she paused so that we would be closer to her. "You two seem to be going slow."
"Yes, Ma'am," we said and nodded in unison. "We are ok, and we are sorry." We picked up our pace and moved closer to her, even though I didn't want to and wanted to stay at a distance so that I could talk to Sam in peace.
Miss Wright frowned and slowly nodded, and a look of worry flashed through her eyes. "Ok, but stay up here, please," she said and tucked her head closer to her chest. "I do not need you two to sneak off with each other and go somewhere you two are not allowed to go."
"Yes, Ma'am," we said and nodded. "We're sorry. We will keep up with you."
"Good," she said and nodded before she turned around and started to walk to the classroom again. She didn't say another word and didn't look back at us, much to my relief, and I couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief, which she was barely able to hear.
Sam looked at me from the corner of her eye and bit back a small smile. She didn't say a word and continued to walk forward with her hand still in mine, even though my hand started to feel wet with sweat.
That is because you are holding her hand, the stupid voice said. She is the reason why your hand isn't dry. Her hands are sweaty and disgusting, so let her hand go.
No...
I grabbed her hand tighter and pressed my lips into a thin line. I prayed that my best friend wouldn't say anything about how wet my hands were in hers because I didn't know how I was going to react if she did.
I couldn't do that to her.
Sam didn't say a word but continued to frown while she looked at me. Her whole body was tense, and I knew that she didn't like me holding her hand so tightly, even though she wouldn't say anything about it.
Finally, she moved closer to me until there was only a small space between us, which I didn't like at all. "What's wrong?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper before she looked at me with furrowed brows and a frown on her face. "You are scaring me, and I do not like it."
I set my jaw and shook my head, not knowing what to tell her or even how to explain whatever was going on through my head. 'I'm sorry," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I tried to relax my grip on her hand, but I couldn't, no matter how hard I tried. "I don't mean to scare you."
"I know," she said and nodded. She licked her lips and hesitated, looking at Miss Wright before she looked at me. Pain and sadness filled her eyes, and I didn't like that she was so sad because of something that I had done. "I'm sorry for ignoring you, Tommy," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It got tough."
She doesn't like you any longer, the stupid voice sneered. She thinks that this is too hard for her to handle and wants to drop you as a friend. She doesn't like you.
She likes me, I said, my voice barely above a whisper, even though my heart didn't feel or believe what I had said, and a part of me thought she hated me no matter how hard I tried to tell myself that she didn't. She doesn't hate me. She can't hate me.
"Are we still friends?" she asked and cocked her head while she studied me with wide sad eyes filled with pain and hope.
No...
"Yes," I said and nodded, ignoring the stupid voice while I looked at her from the corner of my eye. I breathed a small sigh of relief, and my whole body seemed to relax just as my grip on my hand relaxed around hers. "We're still friends."
"Best friends?" she asked and nudged my shoulder playfully with hers, and I couldn't help but bite back a small smile.
Absolutely not.
"Very," I said and nodded, and I continued to ignore the stupid voice in my head because I didn't like it at all. "We are very best friends now and forever."
I promise...
