"Come on, Sam. Hurry up," I grunted while Sam pulled another book from my daddy's bookshelf. I was on my hands and knees while Sam stood on my back. "We don't have that much time left. Daddy will be coming in here any minute, and we didn't find what we were looking for."
Sam placed her foot on a different part of my back and leaned up to get another book. "Why can't you do this?" she asked, annoyed. "I am too short to get the other books off the shelf, Tommy."
"You are very short, Sammy," I pointed out, and she placed one of her feet on my neck. "Oow, did you have to step on my neck?" I moved my neck a bit, trying to make sure that I didn't cause her to fall.
"Yes," she replied and moved her foot off of my neck. "Stop teasing me because I am vertically challenged."
I furrowed my brows in confusion and cocked my head. "Huh?" I was confused because I had never heard that phrase before.
Sam huffed and clambered off my back. She scowled and narrowed her eyes at me, and I cocked my head further while I studied her. "I am short, you dimwitted ninny."
"Then why didn't you just say "short?"" I asked, sitting up in the chair that I had been sprawled in to give us more reach.
She is too smart. She is too different. Do you really want to be friends with someone like her?
I shook my head and grimaced. I hated that stupid voice, but I had no idea how to shut it up.
It was trying to get me to see Sam in a different light, but I wasn't going to let it win. I didn't care what it said. I needed her just as much as Sam needed me. I couldn't let it win.
"Tommy?" Sam asked nervously. She shook my shoulder, and I opened my eyes and looked at her. Worry filled her eyes, and I could tell that she had been calling my name for a while. "Are you ok?" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I nodded. "Yes," I replied, even though I didn't know if I was ok or not. "I think so."
She frowned, and I could tell that she didn't believe me. "Are you going to try to get the books off of the shelf?" she asked, pointing to the second to the last shelf. "We'll have to put the books back before U- Alpha Ryker comes back."
I nodded and stood up in the chair, silently wondering why she stopped calling Daddy "Uncle Ryker" like she used to do in the past. I was about to pull a book off of the shelf when the door banged open, and we both jumped and turned in that direction with my hand still reaching for the book.
My father stood in the doorway, his eyes holding some sort of emotion that I didn't know. "What are you doing?" he asked calmly. His voice had a small bit of warning in it, and I could tell that he didn't want us to lie.
"We... are searching for a secret passageway," Sam said, and he raised an eyebrow in question.
"We think that there is a secret hideout back behind the bookshelf," I added, and Sam nodded in confirmation.
"Why?" he asked.
"We want a spot for ourselves," Sam said. She kept silent about the bullying that had been done to us. She didn't want people to get hurt and hated it when I tried to stand up for her.
"Is that true?" Daddy asked, looking at me.
"Yes, Sir," I replied and nodded.
My father studied us before he nodded. "Then follow me," he said, turning to leave.
"The books..." Sam began, and Daddy looked at her with a soft smile on his face. Her eyebrows were furrowed, and she had a small pout on her lips. She didn't want to leave this place a mess while I didn't care.
"Leave them," he said. "I will pick them up later. It is getting late, and it is sort of a long walk."
Sam and I looked at each other. Both of us were nervous but excited to see what he had to show us. She smiled hesitantly and started to make her way towards him.
I hopped off the seat and followed Sam. I could see over her head and be a bit faster than her. However, I didn't run her over.
Daddy picked Sam up and ruffled my hair, and I swatted at his hands and groaned because I hated people touching my hair. "Let's go," he said and started to lead us away from the room.
And, our search for a secret place behind the bookshelf became one of the last things on our minds.
Maybe Daddy knew of one that we could keep, and hopefully, we would be spending a lot of time there together.

"Are you doing good back there?" Daddy asked as we climbed up the side of a rocky cliff. He looked back at me and watched as I climbed up onto the rocky ledge. He was still carrying Sam, and I couldn't help but feel slightly jealous that she didn't have to climb.
"Yes, Sir," I said. I stood and looked around, trying to see where we were at. However, I couldn't see anything because it had gotten really dark. I didn't like how dark it was in this new place, but I trusted him not to hurt us.
"Are you sure that you don't want to be carried, too?" Sam asked. She was watching me climb, and I could tell that she was nervous that I would fall. Her brown eyes shone in the darkness, and I saw this wisdom look in them that I hadn't noticed before.
"Yes, I am sure," I said and nodded. I climbed up another ledge and walked forward, not paying attention to what I was doing after I had climbed up. I grunted when I ran into my father and rubbed my nose, grimacing. "Daddy," I complained. "Why did you stop?"
He looked down at me and smiled. "We're here," he said. He moved out of my way to show me that Sam was standing at the edge of something.
The moon caused her blonde hair to glow a goldish color, and I could see how beautiful she really was.
She turned to look at me and smiled, holding out her hand. "Come here and look at this," she said. She was excited about the view, and I couldn't help but get excited too. "It's beautiful."
I smiled at her and did what she told me to do. I walked over to her and grabbed her hand before I looked at the area and gasped.
She was right, it was an amazing sight, and I was lucky to have this spot with her.
