I ran up to my room as soon as we were home with my bag in my hand. I ignored my dad calling my name, not knowing what he wanted and not even caring. My heart pounded hard and fast in my chest, and I couldn't help but want it to stop beating.
I wanted everything to stop...
I made it to my room with no one following me, and I breathed a small sigh of relief while I closed and locked the door, knowing full well that Sam would try to come in as soon as she was in the house.
But I didn't want to see her at all...
Sure enough, before I was able to jump onto my bed, there was a knock on my bedroom door. "Tommy?" someone, Sam, asked before there was another knock on my door. Her voice was barely above a whisper, and I could hear the concern in her voice for me. "Tommy, are you ok?"
"No," I said and stood at the door, ignoring the urge to step away from the door and leave her alone. "Leave me alone. I don't want to see you."
Even though a part of me wanted to see her and have her be in the room with me...
There was another knock on the door, not leaving me alone. "Come on, Tommy," she said and rolled her eyes. "I know that is a lie. It's why you are standing by the door and not moving to your bed."
I didn't respond and sat down by the door, not letting my best friend enter my room. I placed my bag down beside me before I folded my arms around my legs and rested my head on them.
My best friend sighed and sat down on the other side of the door. She didn't say a word and hit her head against the door with a small thunk, but it wasn't hard enough to cause her any damage or any damage to the door.
I closed my eyes and pressed my lips into a thin line, staying silent.
Tell her to leave, the stupid voice said, and I pursed my lips in annoyance while I moved my hands through my hair. She doesn't need to be on the other side of the door like she is now.
But I want her there, I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I want her in my room and leaning beside me with her head on my shoulder. I want to take a nap with her beside me because I know that she will watch after me.
No, no you don't, the stupid voice said, and once you accept the fact that you do not need her, then your life will be better. You will have friends, and you will have the respect of the pack that you deserve.
But I should have the respect of the pack even with me being best friends with Sam, I thought and bit my lip hard. I closed my eyes, and tears streamed down my face while I quietly sobbed. Sam is my best friend and will always be my best friend. She is my Beta and will be my Beta when we are old enough to take care of the pack after my parents are dead.
The pack does not need her. They only need you, Thomas. I do not know why you say that they need her when that is not the truth.
But I need her, I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I will always need her.
No you don't, the voice said. You do not, and you will not need her. I know that you will not need her, no matter what you say or do.
I didn't say a word and stood, ignoring the fact that stupid voice in my head about not doing what I was going to do. I unlocked the door and opened it quickly, and my best friend bit back a small gasp while she fell to the ground.
She looked at me with her back still on the ground and frowned, and a look of worry flashed across her face. "Tommy?" she asked and cocked her head to the side while she looked at me. "Are you ok?"
I shook my head and bit the inside of my lip. I didn't say a word, and tears continued to stream down my face with my bottom lip quivering.
Sam turned around and stood while she faced me, and a small frown appeared on her face. "Tommy?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper while she furrowed her brows. "Wh- Oomph."
I hugged her before she could finish her question, and she instantly hugged me back. I bit back a small whine and continued to cry, hating my life and hating the fact that I had to hurt her just as much as I had been.
She hugged me tightly and gently started to push me back into my room. "I'm gonna close the door before we get too far into the room, ok?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "We can go to your bed."
"You can't reach the bed, Sam," I said and sniffled, and my bottom lip quivered some more. "How are you going to get into my bed if you can't reach it?"
"I can get up there," she said. She closed the door with her foot and started to push me toward the bed with a strength that I did not know she possessed.
Oh, Goddess...
I closed my eyes and gritted my teeth when the voice sent a wave of anger washing over me, and I knew that it wanted me to shove her back and make her fall to the ground.
No, I can't hurt her.
But she hurt you, the voice said while she continued to push me toward the bed. Push her away or let go of her, now before I make it too painful for you to continue being pushed backward and toward the bed.
I bit back a small whine but did what I was told to do, even though I didn't do it in the way it wanted me to. I gently shoved her back and got out of the hug, and my best friend stood here with eyes wide and a shocked look on her face. "Let's just go onto the bed, Sam," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Don't fight me, please."
Sam frowned and nodded. She took a step back toward the door, and I couldn't help but open my mouth while I watched her do that with my heart becoming filled with despair even with a small bit of happiness filling my body.
She's leaving...
"S-"
Sam gave me a cheeky grin and shook her head before she started to walk toward the other side of the bed, and I watched her, amazed in a stunned silence. "Get into bed, Tommy," she said. "I'll meet you there and will stay until you don't need me anymore." She bowed her head just a tad and continued to move toward the bed, and I looked at her with wide eyes. "I promise."
