As Sebastian outlined their first order of business, Mia nodded along in agreement, though a hint of uncertainty lingered in her expression. Sensing her confusion, Sebastian paused, realizing that he needed to provide further clarification.

"I'm sorry, Mia. Let me explain," Sebastian said, his voice gentle as he sought to clarify their next steps. "Identifying the essential skills means determining the specific literacy skills that our students need to succeed."

Mia's brow furrowed slightly as she absorbed Sebastian's explanation. "But how do we know which skills are essential?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.

Sebastian nodded, understanding her question. "That's where assessment comes in," he replied, his tone thoughtful. "We'll need to gather data on our students' reading and writing abilities to identify areas where they may need additional support."

He went on to explain the various assessment tools and methods they could use, such as standardized tests, observations, and student work samples. Sebastian emphasized the importance of looking beyond just academic performance to consider factors such as language proficiency, background knowledge, and individual learning styles.

"As we gather this information, we'll start to see patterns emerge," Sebastian continued, his voice growing more animated with each word. "We'll be able to pinpoint the specific skills that our students are struggling with and develop targeted interventions to address those needs."

Mia listened intently as Sebastian spoke, a sense of clarity dawning in her mind. As she began to grasp the concept of identifying essential skills, she felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of making a tangible difference in the lives of their students.

"Thank you,," Mia said gratefully, her eyes shining with newfound understanding. "I'm ready to get started."

Sebastian's eyes fell on a stack of papers sitting in the printer tray, and with a decisive nod, he reached out to retrieve them. As he flipped through the pages, he quickly located the list of student names that he had been searching for.

"Here we go," Sebastian said, a note of satisfaction in his voice as he plucked the list from the stack of papers. "These are the students I want you to start observing and assessing."

With purposeful strides, Sebastian made his way over to Mia's desk, the list of names clutched firmly in his hand. As he reached her side, he placed the paper down in front of her, a sense of determination in his gaze.

"Mia," Sebastian began, his voice steady with resolve, "I want you to start by observing and assessing these students."

Mia's eyes widened in surprise as she glanced down at the list of names before her. "But there are so many," she remarked, a hint of uncertainty in her tone.

Sebastian nodded in understanding. "I know it seems like a lot, but we need to cast a wide net to ensure that we're capturing a comprehensive picture of our students' abilities," he explained. "Start by observing their behavior in the classroom, their reading and writing habits, and any challenges they may be facing. Then, we'll use that information to inform our assessments."

Mia nodded, her expression resolute as she took in Sebastian's instructions. "I understand," she replied, her voice determined. "I'll get started right away."

Sebastian's determination shone through as he leaned in closer to Mia, his eyes alight with purpose. "In addition to observing and assessing these students, I want you to document all of your observations," he instructed, his tone firm yet supportive.

Mia nodded, her expression focused as she absorbed Sebastian's words. "Documenting everything will help us keep track of our findings and identify any patterns or trends," he continued, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. "I'll send you the data collection document I've prepared, and we can use it to record all of your observations."

Sebastian nodded in approval as Mia expressed her readiness to document her observations. With a reassuring smile, he turned and walked back to his computer, his mind already focused on the next steps of their plan.

"Mia," Sebastian called out over his shoulder, his voice carrying a sense of purpose. "Could you please give me your email? I'll send you the data collection document right away."

Mia quickly rattled off her email address, her excitement evident in her voice. "Sure, it's mlee@husd.net," she replied eagerly, her eyes bright with anticipation.

Sebastian nodded, quickly typing in Mia's email address and attaching the document to the message. With a few swift clicks, he hit send, the email disappearing into the digital abyss.

"There you go, Mia," Sebastian said with a satisfied grin as he turned back to face her. "You should have everything you need now."
