Calla's POV:
School was going by so fast. I only had one day left and then I was done. I smiled to myself at that thought. Stopping at a stoplight in my beautiful Ford, I thought about summer and what it could bring me. "Maybe you'll get lucky like Bryn and find your mate this summer!" My wolf added into my thoughts. "Not likely." I kept that thought to myself but smiled to my wolf. At least one of us had hope. "Oh, snap!" I said as two cars angrily honked behind me. I had spaced out through an entire green light. "Sorry!" I waved back. In response, I got flipped two birds. Yeesh.
Back at the pack house, I started on my homework while listening to the sappy sounds of Jack Johnson. When I was halfway through my English paper on the human brain, Ashley surprised me with a visit. "Hey Ash." I greeted her. "Hey Calla, can I talk to you about something?" She asked while running her sweaty palms on her jeans. "Sure." I said, putting my mackbook aside. "Do you think it's possible for a mated wolf to change his mate?" She blurted out. Oh boy. "Ash, you know that's impossible. But why do you ask?" I said. She looked down. "Ash, common, who have you fallen for?" I pestered. "Jack." she said so quietly that I almost didn't hear her. Oh god. Jack was Karen's mate. "Ummm, do you think it could just be the connection that you and Karen have?" I asked tenitively. She burst into tears and flopped on my bed. "That's the problem! I don't know! I can't ask Karen either because she'll kill me!" She sobbed. "So don't tell her." I offered. "But it's so hard to keep things from her! She's like my sister!" She sobbed again, getting tears all over my silk comforter. Oh man. I royally sucked at giving advice. So I said this instead. "Ashley. You and I, the minute we get done with school are going out to look for mates." "What? We can do that?" She stuttered. "I don't see why not. And how could it hurt? We could go every Thursday if you want." I replied. "Really Calla? You'd do that?" She sniffed. "Yeah, I need a mate too. We could even see if Nick wants to come. He's gotta be getting desperate." I said. It seemed he was too. He'd been hiding in his room and making himself more and more scarce. "But he still has five years. He has time, he shouldn't worry." She said. "Yeah but not having a mate at his age must be hard. Take how lonely and lost you feel and multiply it by two years. He's struggling." I said. "Yeah, I'll ask if he wants to come with tomorrow." She said as she turned to leave. "Oh, and Calla?" she aksed. "Yeah?" "Thanks." She said with a puffy eyed smile. "No problem." I smiled back. When she was gone, I returned to my paper, thinking about Ashley and Nick and Myself and how we were all so different, but so alike.
When I woke up, I hadn't realized that I dozed off. I checked the clock. 3:21 am. I still had to do the conclusion to my paper. I sat up and finished it, glad to be done with it. But when I tried to fall back asleep, I could only find restlessness. It was like my wolf was squirming inside my head. "What's wrong?" I asked it in mind speak. It whimpered. I asked again and all it said was, "He's hurt." "Who?? Who's hurt?!" I pleaded with it. It howled in pain. "Is it Stephen??" I half screeched in my head. "No, no! It's him!" She bit back frantically. "Who is him!!" I screamed it at her. "Ben." She howled. I tired asking basic questions to her, like who he was, where he was. But each time I got no reply. I had no idea who Ben was or why he was affecting my wolf this way, but he was in danger, and I was panicking.
By 4:00 am I was in the woods, in wolf form and trying to undestand what just happened. All I know was that some kid named Ben was in trouble, and that he was important to my wolf. Not much to go on. When my wolf and I calmed down at 5:34 am, we trotted back home to get ready for school.
I came down the stairs, showered with straight hair, a yellow top and white jean cutoff shorts. After eating a healthy breakfast of donuts and coffee, I put on hot pink gladiator sandals that matched the pink American Eagle logo on my shirt when I heard my parents talking. "How many?" My mom whispered. "12." My father replied and mom gasped. "That's too many. What if they come here John?" I heard Stephs father say. "They won't. They're all dead." I heard three gasps. I guess Amy was there too. "How is that possible. A pack of 30, correct? Taking on twelve powerful rouges? How many survived?" Bill asked. I shivered at the word rouge. "24." My father replied. "They must be very skilled fighters then." My mom said grimly. "How could they pull off such a task? The Alpha of the Black Sea pack is only as old as Stephen." Bill argued. "He's smarter than you think. With one of the largest packs in America, do you think he wouldn't have them trained to fight? They have to be ready for anything thrown their way. Too many wolves want that power." My father explained. I was interested now. I had never heard of the Black Sea pack but they sounded close. Along with the dangerous rouges. I shivered again. I couldn't listen to anymore of the conversation or I would be late to school. So I grabbed my book bag, and headed out the door. On the way to school, I idly wondered if the attack on the Black Sea Pack had anything to do with Ben. I'd have to find out more after school.
"One last day." I told myself.
