(Y/n POV)We did it.
We got back around 5 a.m and rested on the couches. Mission successful. Specs wasn't apart of the heist so he went around New York spreading the news of a party we were having in honour of our daring quest. He was even brave enough to get Spot Colon and his crew in on it. It was gonna be a rager!!
I managed to swipe some supplies from the deli. Not too shabby for a newsie bash. I set up with some of the fellahs and by midnight we were ready.
Spot and his crew were the first to arrive, followed by the Richmond and the Bronx newsies. Soon enoug, the party was in full swing. I was getting some beer, (just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't down a good beer!) and I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"Hey gorgeous. You here with anyone?"
I see a short man with a red and black striped tank top on, with matching black pants. He has a cap on and has quite a lot of dirt on his face. He's cute, but he's no Mush.
"No, actually I am running this party." I wink. Hey, me and Mush aren't together.... Yet. So a little flirting never hurt anyone.
"Oh an independent goil huh! I admire independent goils." He slides a little closer to me, our shoulders almost touching. All I can smell is the faint scent of beer. I look at his arms, they are very muscular and firm. My face turns the slightest shade of pink.
We continue to talk as the noise of Race and Romeo playing the spoons fills the room.
"It's kinda loud in here, wanna ditch this place?"
Ok I liked him and all, but I wasn't ready to run off into the night with this guy, I didn't even know his name! I turn and look around the room for any aid, when I see Mush staring at me with hurt eyes. He spins on his heel and runs up to the rooftop.
"Ummm, maybe later." I say, distracted and brush past him. Mush couldn't possibly think I was seriously into that guy right?
I run up the stairs and push open the door to find him looking out into the night sky.
"Hey...good party huh?" I say trying to spark up a conversation.
"Good party? That's all you have to say?" Mush says with a frustrated look on his face.
"What are you talking about?!" I ask. I know exactly what he is talking about.
"Spot? Really? Am am I crazy or is there something between us?" He says firmly.
I don't know what to say.
"Because I thought we did, but then I see you flirting with Spot Colon?" Taking a step closer as he says this. "You're confusing me! I feel like i'm being played like a fiddle! I know you didn't go through all that trouble at the refuge for a pal!" Still slowly inching towards me.
I take a step closer, practically in his face and I'm angry now.
"You're not the boss of me! I can talk to whoever I want, stop acting like we are together!" I yell and it looks like i've just slapped him in the face.
"Don't you want to be?" He whispers.
We stand there, two inches from each other, not making a sound. He's clearly drunk or he wouldn't be acting like this.
We start to lean in. My heart is beating out of my chest. I can feel the warmth radiating off of his body. Our eyes closing slowly, lips pursed, when we hear someone crash through the door. We abruptly pull away from each other.
Jack looks confused and stiffens up, and realizes. "Oh... um sorry if I'm interrupting anything, but we're playing truth or dare if you care to join us."
He quickly runs back down the stairs, leaving us alone once again.
"...Might as well go join them." I say, flustered.
I run down the stairs as Mush follows in pursuit. I go to sit down beside Race as Mush sits beside Buttons.
"Alright let's get this started!" Spot says rubbing his hands as he goes to sit on the other side of me, but then, a foot sticks out in front of him and spot goes crashing down.
"Whoops, didn't see you there." Mush says with a laugh, shooting a grin at me.
I don't grin back. He is such a jealous prick when he's drunk.
We start to play. And can I just say these boys are so immature! They get asked their most embarrassing moments, dared to run around the room without any pants, and many impressions were done.
"Ok y/n, truth or dare?" Spot asks.
"Truth. I would like to keep my pants on, thank you very much." I say with a giggle.
"Ok... have you kissed any of da boys here." Spot smirks slyly.
"Nah, but she sure wanted to."
I whip my head to the side as I see Race look back with wide eyes. He did not. Everyone is silent, staring at me. I don't dare look at Mush.
I get up and smack Race right in the face.
"YOU ASSHOLE! I THOUGHT WE AGREED ON BEING FRIENDS." Whoops. If people didn't know who he meant, they sure did now.
I run upstairs and watch at the door. Chaos ensues as Mush stands up and walks over to Spot and throws a punch at spot but he blocks it and easily throws him to the ground. Mush isn't affected though and gets up. He then walks over to Race, But Race screams at him before he can do anything.
"I WOULDVE TOLD YOU, BUT IT WOULDVE GOTTEN IN DA WAY OF YOU AN' HER. WHY CANT YA JUST TELL HER YA LIKE HER." Race starts to stumble forwards but Mush catches him and pushes him onto the couch.
"I TRIED. I REALLT DID BUT SHES DRUNK AND DOESNT KNOW WHATS GOING ON. I CANT DO IT."
Wait a minute. He thinks I'm drunk? Does that mean everything that happened on the rooftop was fake?
Mush turns and looks up the staircase. Our eyes meet once again. Why does something always happen when our eyes meet. It's like something bad is destined to happen every time we connect. Maybe we aren't meant to be together.
"ALRIGHT EVERYBODY OUT, SHOWS OVA" Jack jumps and roars.
The newsies of New York scatter out of the building.
That's it, I have to get out of here. I have caused these boys too much pain, they won't even miss me.
I decide to make my escape once they are all safe in their beds. I clean up the mess of the rager though, it was the least I could do.
Dear Mush,
I have to go. I can't tell you where or why but it's for the better. For both of us. Maybe one day our paths with cross again. When the stars align. In another universe, I know we were meant to be together. But not in this one, it's too difficult in the world we live in.
From, Your goil.
I start to go up the stairs and place it under his pillow, but I decide it's too painful for me to see his beautiful face so peaceful. I stuffed the note in my long skirt pocket and once again set out in the dark city like I had all those months ago. It felt like forever ago I was happy with Darcy. I never thought things would change. I never thought I would be in love with a poor newsie boy, and definitely not Mush Meyers.
I unlock the doors to the deli, and lay down on a table. Not ideal but it's all I have right now. I eventually fall asleep dreaming of my blue eyed boy.
