It's been four days since Logan left...
My thumb glides across the screen of my phone, navigating the list of open commissions on Nexus.
Four days since I last saw him or heard his voice.
I find another one that catches my eye, and I swiftly take a screenshot of the commission details. With a deft tap, I open the messaging app and send the image to my hunting partner. The text accompanying it reads, 'Should I enlist us for this?' The anticipation hangs in the air as I wait for his response, the seconds stretching into moments of suspense. While I wait for him to check my message, my eyes unintentionally wander to the cascade of messages sent in the aftermath of his departure. The texts range from desperate pleas for his return to earnest assurances of my capability to safeguard our shared secret if given another chance.
He didn't even read them...
And as hours pass with him remaining offline, a sense of defeat settles in as the realization dawns that my attempt at luring him out with the prospect of work has failed. With a heavy exhale, I toss my phone aside, the screen now a cold reflection of my thwarted efforts. Rubbing my face, I feel the weariness weigh me down once more.
I find myself retreating further into the cocoon of my bed, burying myself in the warmth of blankets. The daylight fades as I remain in bed, barely summoning the energy to fetch sustenance from the kitchen. Contemplating calling it a night, the lack of motivation keeping me pinned to the mattress, I stare at the ceiling in silent resignation.
Just as I close my eyes, seeking refuge in the embrace of sleep, my phone rings, sending an electric current through my spine. In an instant, I sit up and snatch the device from the nightstand, a flicker of hope warming my entire form. My heartbeats ringing in my ears as I glance at the caller's ID, only to have my shoulders slump in disappointment. Marcus's name stares back at me from the screen, not the one I was desperately hoping for.
An involuntary groan reverberates in my chest, and I answer the call, bringing the phone to my ear. "What do you want?", there's an edge to my words.
"That's how you greet me? Are you sure we're friends?", the male scoffs on the other end, his voice carrying a tone of mock offense. I pinch the bridge of my nose to ward off the swelling headache. I really don't have the energy to socialize...
"Marcus...", my voice carries my fatigue, another groan slipping from my lips in response to his persistence.
"Wow, you really sound like you're having a shitty time... Come join us for some drinks; Gwen's paying!"
My brows slightly furrow and a slight chill runs in my veins at the anticipation that knocks at the wearied recesses of my mind once again. I quickly clutch the device with both hands, steadying the slight trembling in my grip as I inquire, "I-Is Logan coming?"
"He's already here.", Marcus responds, the words landing with an intensity that jolts me into immediate action. Without a moment's hesitation, I lunge out of bed, a surge of adrenaline propelling me to the closet in search of a jacket.
I slide my arms through its sleeves in a hurried frenzy, the urgency of the situation overriding any semblance of composed thought. Rushing out of my room and down the staircase, I continue the conversation with Marcus, my words tumbling out in a breathless stream, "He is?? He's not leaving yet, right? Could you— Could you make him stay until I'm there??"
