Ivy
I heard a beeping noise getting louder and louder as I slowly came to. When I opened my eyes, I looked to the side and found the source of the beeping in the monitor next to me. There were flowers and a child's drawing on the small table next to the bed. A woman with green eyes and a superhero cape was in the drawing with lots of little hearts around her. My eyes wandered around the room, and I recognized the small room where Doc examined me after the panic attack.
And then it all came back...Alice's words to King as she told him that a body had been found of a woman from Canada, and the pounding in my head that caused me to black out.
Aunt Jane...I held my head, which was hurting, with my hand and felt the bandage that was tightly bound. The thought of losing Jane caused deep sadness in me, and tears welled up in my eyes. I tried to get up and saw a leather bracelet with a silver plate on my wrist that I didn't have before as I pushed myself up.
"Oh my God, she's awake, Doc!" I heard Alice shouting too loudly and looked in the direction where her voice came from.
She sat on a chair with her laptop and took the headphones out of her ears as she put everything aside and came to me. Her long dark hair was put up in a ponytail, and her bangs were tangled as she ran her hand through it. Doc came into the room and asked me a few questions as he shone a light into my eyes that I pushed away.
"What the hell Doc?" I asked annoyed and he smiled at me.
"I'll tell them, you stay with her," I heard him say to Alice, who sat down on the bed next to me.
As I sat up, Alice took my hand, and I looked at her.
"It's not your Aunt Ivy...the woman who was found," she said to me.
"What? Are you sure?" I asked incredulously.
"Bane confirmed it. It's not Jane...Whoever the girl was was obviously kidnapped in Canada too," Alice said, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
My head hurt, and I grabbed the bandage again and made a face.
"You hit your head pretty badly when you fell on Doc's vase," she explained to me.
"Where's Bane?" I asked her.
"I think Doc is just getting him...he was pretty worried," she said.
"I have to call my father, he'll be worried too," I said to her.
"Your father doesn't know what happened. I had to pretty much beg Bane not to say anything...I know you wouldn't want them to take you away now that you know Jane is here somewhere," she said and smiled at me.She was right, Dad would have immediately picked me up, and since she is also a rider princess, Alice knew this.
"Thank you," I whispered as I looked at my wrist.
She raised her hand and showed me the same bracelet on her hand.
"I got one too," she said, laughing.
"All of our women have one. There's a GPS device in the silver plate," she explained to me.
I looked at her confused, and she laughed, "It's for our safety," she said. After everything I learned yesterday about human trafficking, nothing surprised me anymore. “Thank you,” I said to her.
"Oh, I didn't put it on you. It was King," she said, wiggling her eyebrows.
I exhaled and adjusted myself as I heard the door crack open.
"Kid?" I heard Bane shout as he ran down the hallway and stormed into the room. I smiled at him as he came into the room, and his face relaxed as he looked at me.
"You scared the shit out of me," he said as he knelt next to me.
"I'm fine, old man, you won't get rid of me anytime soon," I said to him, and he just shook his head.
Bane and Alice explained to me about the woman who was found, and I was happy when Bane confirmed that it wasn't Aunt Jane.
"You should call your father, he's worried. I had to lie that you've been busy for two days," Bane said to me. "You know I don't like lying to the president. But she threatened me," Bane said as he pointed at Alice, who was looking at him with a raised eyebrow.
Two days? I must have been out too long.
I had to laugh as I watched the two arguing and turned to the door when someone knocked. King stood in the doorway and looked at me.
"Hi," he said, and I smiled at him and said "Hi" back.
Bane and Alice looked from King to me, and the silence suddenly seemed uncomfortable.
"I'll go get your phone," Bane said and grinned at me.
Alice was still looking at King as Bane walked past him and entered the room.
"Thank you for that," I said as I held up my hand and pointed to the bracelet.
"It's not like we're engaged now," he said, smiling. "It's for your safety," he added.
Alice still looked from him to me and then stood up.
"I'm going, I still have to do a few things...You guys are weird," she said as she took her laptop and waved as she left the room.I tried to get out of bed, which caused King to push me back.
"You should take it easy. You've been out for two days," he said as he looked at me.
"I'm fine," I replied, even though I felt pretty tired.
"Sure," he said and pointed to the pillow so I could lay back.
"You gave us all quite a scare...but luckily Doc was there straight away and patched everything up," King explained to me as he nodded at my head, sitting down on the bed.
I looked at his face, and he seemed worried as he studied me. He took my hand, and his fingers slid over the bracelet until he gently stroked my hand with his thumb. His eyes traveled from my eyes to my lips and again to my eyes.
"Look who's awake!" I heard coming from the door. Duke came into the room smiling, and King rolled his eyes as if Duke interrupted something important and let go of my hand.
"I'm glad you're feeling better again," Duke said as he faced us.
I nodded, and he talked a little, which I didn't notice at all. I just looked at King, who looked back at me. Soon Bane came back, and I called Dad, who was happy to hear from me. I just said I was busy and offended that he didn't answer when I called him, and he seemed to believe it. Bane and Duke were talking about our car being repaired, and King stood there with his hands in his pockets, looking at me.
"What about Aunt Jane? Have you heard anything new?" I asked, interrupting their conversation. "The building you found where this idiot lives is under full-time surveillance. As soon as we have something, you will know," Duke said. "Mom made you something to eat when Alice told her you were awake. She'll be over soon," he added.
This seemed to be the deciding factor, and King formally said they would let me rest. As they left the room, he turned to me and said, "I'll come back later."Evelyn actually soon came with a lot of food, which she stuffed into me. The food was really good, and I didn't resist when I felt hungry.
"Bane said that you had a bad diet and didn't eat enough, that's why you were weak, and that's why I'm sure you had the panic attack and your fainting...and the stress too," she said as she watched me eat.
"I've only eaten apples for days," I said with my mouth full.
She laughed and shook her head. "You have to take better care of yourself. You weakened your body," she said caringly.
Doc changed my bandages afterward and gave me something for the pain, and Alice also came back with her daughter Drew, who looked exactly like her, and another young woman. Erin was the wife of Void, the hacker, and, like him, she wore glasses that emphasized her pretty face, surrounded by the big blonde curls that crowned her head.
"Have you seen my drawing of yourself?" the little girl asked proudly and pointed to the picture that was standing next to my bed.
"I did; that's a really nice picture," I said to her, to which she smiled proudly.
"You should also draw Uncle King next to her with a stupid expression on his face staring at her," Alice said and grinned at me.
Evelyn didn't seem to understand what she meant and was talking to Drew while Erin and Alice looked at each other and smiled. I was unsure what Alice meant, so I didn't ask.
The company of the women did me good, and we talked for a bit before they let me rest. I lay in bed and thought about King and what happened today. His look and the tender touch of his hand on mine. And I waited for him. He said he would come back, and somehow I was looking forward to it. But he didn't come that day...or the next.
I don't know why I longed for his visit; I saw him with that redhead. It's probably his wife or girlfriend, and he probably just felt sorry for me, and I'm imagining things. I couldn't get his eyes out of my head and knew that I had gotten myself into something and was distracting myself from my goal. My destination was Aunt Jane, and I couldn't lie around anymore, so I decided to get out of bed without Doc's consent. I have to focus on the important things and forget about King. I'm so fucking stupid.
