Chapter 2 - Azriel's POV

◈⋙◇◈◇⋘◈

"You want them to live where?" I ask as my shadows flare out. "I better have heard you wrong, Rhys."

"You heard me correctly." He speaks sternly as he leans against the desk in the office of the River House. "I need someone to keep an eye on them and there's no one better than you."

"By them, you mean the eldest..." My mind flashes to the way the female has been unreadable. Even my shadows are having trouble reporting to me about her. "I can't promise I won't kill her."

"You will do no such thing." He grins, finding amusement in the situation. "I expect you to move into the Town House by tomorrow."

Attempting to take a deep breath in, I look out the open window and   focus on the beautiful birds that flutter by the nearby tree to calm my breath. "Why can we all not stay in the House of Wind? Cassian and Nesta are more than capable of watching them."

"I will be gifting the house to Nesta as a mating ceremony present. Beron is guarded so Eris will need to take his time in finding the right moment to attack. I expect Scarlett and Poppy to be here for longer than the few weeks before their ceremony and I don't intend on gifting it then forcing Nesta to house our guests."

"So you force me from my home and then order me to babysit the offspring of the male at the top of my kill list?"

"It won't be babysitting." He chuckles, glancing out the window at the now setting sun. "Think of it as forced friendship with another courts Spymaster and her threatening older sister. It'll be good for you, Az."

Staying quiet, my swirling shadows do more than enough to show my brother how unamused I am by the situation.

"Knock knock?" Feyres voice cuts in as she opens the door with Nyx bundled in her arms.

"Hello, darling." Rhys coos toward his mate as he swiftly moves to kiss her gently then takes his son in his arms. "How's our little bundle doing today?"

"Good." She confirms, resting her head against him. "Took Mor a while to get him down, but he had a nice nap while we were out." A ping of jealousy sweeps across my chest as I see the family together. Both my brothers... mated and happy.

Why hasn't the mating bond snapped into place with Mor yet?

Why must I still be forced to love her from a distance?

"Azriel." Rhys cuts off my thoughts as I bring my attention to my High Lord. "Town House tomorrow, okay?"

Nodding silently to him, I wish them a goodnight as I exit through the window and fly towards the House of Wind.

Arriving, I clench my fist in seeing everything I own already packed away in boxes. This fucking magical house. Looking around at the nearly empty space that I have occupied for centuries, I curse under my breath before I decide there's no point in waiting.

Using my shadows, I tuck away all my items within the hidden space then launch myself off the balcony and towards the Town House.

Landing on the rooftop garden my shadows scatter and enter the home, searching for any signs of danger. Of course they find nothing within the empty home. "Mother help me." I huff under my breath as the setting sun fully disappears in the distance.

Shaking my head, I take one step forward before a soft chirp catches my ear and I look up to see two small birds fluttering by. Looking at them with a bit of intensity in my gaze, I realize one of them has the same pattern of a bird I saw earlier. The exact same type that was lingering outside the office window. Just as the thought passes me, the two creatures suddenly shoot up into the sky.
